Guided Walking Holidays  - La Gomera

Discover the wild landscapes, dramatic scenery, deserted beaches and sleepy mountain villages of La Gomera in the best possible way – on foot. La Gomera is a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of other parts of the Canaries, an island that time and mass tourism forgot. Only accessible by ferry, it’s a tranquil island haven filled with a wild natural beauty that casts a spell on all who visit.

First glimpses from the boat from Los Cristianos in Tenerife suggest La Gomera is barren and deserted but this is deceptive. You will quickly discover traditional Canarian ‘white villages’, mountains, pine forests, dramatic cliffs and wildlife endemic to the island – it’s all here to explore and only add to the many reasons why discovering this island is a real pleasure.

Our centre on the island is Valle Gran Rey, a coastal resort about an hour’s drive from the capital of San Sebastian. Our hotel is situated on the seafront, a short distance from the beach and is close to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Garajonay National Park. There is great walking from here, enabling us to see the real beauty of the valleys and wonderful seascapes. Follow the path of mountain streams into fertile valleys bursting with lush vegetation and tropical mountain scenery, and across rugged volcanic mountains for unparalleled views across the island.

Our first and last nights are spent at a comfortable hotel in Costa Adeje, Tenerife. On our transfer days between islands, the planned ferry schedules allow us time to also have a walk, making the most of the hiking opportunities available.

Please note That some of the walks may be a little more challenging if the weather is inclement.

This departure: Grade 5

  1. Day 1

We arrive in Tenerife and transfer to our hotel in Costa Adeje on the west coast of the island.

  2. Day 2

We have an early departure to the ferry terminal for the 1 hour crossing to San Sebastian, the capital of La Gomera.
On arrival our transfer bus takes us up into the Mountains and down into Valle Gran Rey. After checking in to our excellent hotel, we have the chance to explore the villages in the valley taking in the most northerly beach and a walk at the bottom of the cliffs at the southern end and walk past one of a small number of beaches where it is safe to swim in the sea. There will be time to stop for drinks and to have lunch and to point out the shops, restaurants and bars.
The walk should be no more than 8km with an ascent of less than 50m.

  3. Day 3 to 8

The following walks will normally be included in our walking programme. Day 6 is often taken as a free day on which you can either relax in Valle Gran Rey or possibly walk to the waterfall up the Barranco de Arure or walk beyond the harbour area to a fruit garden.

    • GARAJONAY NATIONAL PARK - We take transport 20 minutes to the village of Arure. We ascend to the neighbouring village of Las Hayas for a mid-morning break and continue into the Garajonay National Park through lauirsilva and wax myrtle forest to Las Cresces for a picnic lunch. We continue our circular walk back to Bar Conchita in Arure for refreshment before our transport pick-up back to Valle Gran Rey. Plenty of time for swimming in the sea or relaxing by the hotel's rooftop swimming pool. 12km, 350m ascent and descent.

    • ERMITA DE GUADALUPE & EL CERCADO - We travel to the village of Chipude at 1050m. We will walk to the Ermita de Guadalupe, a small hermitage set in a stunning location overlooking Valle Gran Rey. Taking a picnic lunch along the way we walk to El Cercado, known for its traditional pottery making. There will be time for a drink and a look at the pottery shops and perhaps the pottery museum before continuing to the end of the walk at La Laguna Grande recreation area. 13.5km, 650m ascent, 385m descent

    • GARAJONAY - Our walk today takes us to the highest point on the island, Garajonay at 1487m. After the short climb and time to admire the 360 degree views we complete a circular route via the village of Imada finishing at Pajarito junction for our transport back to the hotel. 12km, 650m ascent and descent.

    • CHORROS DE ESPINA TO ALOJERA - We take transport to Chorros De Epina. Visiting the springs we hear about an ancient legend before continuing through hamlets and palm groves to complete our route to the village of Alajero and a final drink at Bar Perdomo. 10km, 200m ascent, 750m descent.

  4. Day 9

In order to make the most of our time on La Gomera we include a walk on the transfer day back to Tenerife. Our coach takes us to the Camino Forestal de Majona above San Sebastian. The path rises 400m to a ridge passing through remote and rugged scenery, then descends to San Sebastian, with any luck allowing time to explore the town. 9km, 400m ascent and 750m descent, 3 ½ hours
Those not wanting to walk can continue from the drop-off point by coach to San Sebastian to spend the day there. Everyone will then meet about an hour before the ferry sails to be reunited with their bags. We take the ferry back to Tenerife and then continue with a short transfer to Costa Adeje and our hotel.

  5. Day 10

We bid the Canary Islands goodbye and leave the hotel by road for Tenerife Reina Sofia Airport for our return flight home.
