The UK’s Top Cities for a Walking Holiday

Ramble Worldwide | Thu 17 Feb 2022

The UK is home to some of the most walk-worthy cities in the world, from the culture-rich cobbles up north to the beating heart down south, there are a plethora of cities just awaiting your amble.

So we’ve combed through our UK city breaks and selected our top three that we feel will take you on a proper’ British city saunter.

York

Famous for its cobblestone streets adorned with overhanging timber-framed houses, York is a city enriched in a wealth of history and culture, making it a perfect location for a city walk.

Amble the shambles and step into a fairytale-like labyrinth of picturesque storefronts weaving their way across the cobbles through to the York Minster, a 524ft cathedral dressed in beautiful gothic architecture home to northern Christian culture since the 7th century.

Delve into the heritage of York at the annual Jorvik Viking Festival and discover the city's Nordic past, or walk the steps of William the Conqueror and venture the famous stairs of Clifford’s tower for an authentic step back in time.

With plenty to see, and an array of things to do, you will soon see why York is the place to be for any walking enthusiast.

Winchester

Enriching Southern England with artistic cathedrals and historic culture is Winchester, a city once home to King Alfred the Great.

Our afternoon is spent traversing the city from the south, starting at the Itchen Valley and making our way up to St Catherine's Hill where you can indulge in the panoramic views of this ancient city.

Surrounded by idyllic countryside and filled with a wealth of modern culture, Winchester offers a plethora of activities for all its visitors. Whether you want to tour the grounds of Winchester College and experience the oldest standing institution in the country, or saunter the city streets and experience the great hall, Winchester truly has it all.

Salisbury

Similar to Winchester, Salisbury is a city known for its captivating beauty, history, and fairytale-like views of its 13th century ornate.

During our tour of Salisbury city, we’ll enter the great cathedral, which harbors breathtaking architecture, stunning but vastly different from that of Winchesters cathedral. Here you can explore the historic halls and witness the well preserved Magna Carta manuscripts dating back from 1215 AD.

Thriving in culture and rich in heritage, Salisbury offers its visitors a world of experiences. From walking the city streets and seeing the artistically revived heritage buildings to ambling your way across tranquil plains of the scenic countryside, It’s needless to say that Salisbury is a must-walk destination.
