The Acropolis of Lindos – Walking in Greece

Ramblers Walking Holidays | Tue 05 Jan 2016

Greece is also home to a long and varied history with many ancient historical sites to visit, the cultural experiences mixed with some fantastic hiking opportunities make the Greek island of Rhodes a fantastic place to visit.

The acropolis of Lindos is a great example of the culture Rhodes has to offer. This historical site was settled and fortified by the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, The knights of St John and the Ottomans successively throughout history. This makes it specifically interesting as it contains signs and remains of each set of tremendous inhabitants. The rocky outcrop was settled for defensive purposes and stands high above the modern village of Lindos, so visiting the ancient runes of the acropolis provides a breathtaking view over the surrounding coastline and the harbours of the west part of the island. The acropolis is surrounded by a crumbling Hellenistic wall which is built into the rock itself.

The runes themselves are as varied as the former inhabitants, each has made their mark. The oldest visible ruins on the site, the Doric Temple of Athena Lindia date from 300BC and are the first in a succession of impressive buildings built over Lindos. Further examples of ancient Greek stone work can be seen on the acropolis at the Propylae of the Sanctuary with its original Stoa still remaining. Other key sites overlooking Lindos such as the relief of a Rhodian warship or the church of St John are great attractions to see when walking in Greece.

Walk up to the Acropolis of Lindos via the steep slopes, but remember to bring a bottle of water, as Lindos is the hottest place on Rhodes. There are also donkeys available to take you up to the top if you want to give your feet a rest.
