Overview
This was always bandit country, the Scottish Borders caught between the generally warring Scots and English. It is easy to see why such beautiful countryside would be coveted. Melrose and its abbey are an outstanding attraction. Various gardens, Dawyck being the most famous, have thrived in the valleys. We will visit some and enjoy the scenery around on gentle walks.
We stay at the Tontine Hotel, centrally located in the appealing town of Peebles. The hotel enjoys an enviable reputation for food and hospitality. Peebles, set on the banks of the River Tweed, is a lovely little town compact but full of interest. During our holiday we enjoy a mixture of culture, religious and secular and gentle countryside. The land is formed and steep sided valleys so we will generally keep to the valleys and enjoy riverside strolls.
Each day is different. We take in various iconic buildings and some pleasant riverside strolls. We use a mixture of public and private transport. We have various coffee stops to make sure nobody gets thirsty. Hopefully we have everything covered.
