Walking grade

Grade 4

This Grade 4 moderate holiday includes full and half day walks at a moderate pace over hilly terrain and is likely to include an element of sightseeing as well. Half day walking will probably include about 3 hours of walking, with full days having around 5 hours. Expect ascents and descents of up to about 600m. See the 'Proposed Itinerary' section for more information.

Holiday Highlights

  • Mile after mile of sandy beaches
  • Superbly located hotel just up from the beach
  • Endless nature spotting possibilities. Look out for seals and wading birds
  • The Avocet. Adorning the RSPB logo, spotting one is a real treat.
  • Walk on the Peddars Way! Ancient trackway and Roman military road

Subtle charm perhaps best describes Norfolk’s delights. Renowned for some of the longest expanses of sandy beach in the country. Pretty villages, secret inlets, islands and marshes the coast will not disappoint. However, we do run into potential trouble with Trades Descriptions as we also spend an intriguing day inland exploring the Peddars Way.

From our hotel next to the beach we can walk out to Gore Point. Beach, sea and sky mingle into one on this excellent introductory stroll. Unlike much coastal walking in Norfolk don’t worry too much about the steepness of the paths, just enjoy the view. We also explore further east with a classic walk from Wells to Brancaster, quite possibly the most picturesque and varied section on the whole Coast path.

Inland our walk we reach the heady altitude of nearly 100m such are the mountains we climb. The Castle and Priory at Castle Acre are unexpected delights, but the walking remains gentle and rural. A classic English countryside stroll.

  • Accommodation in twin, double or single rooms at the Le Strange Arms
  • Breakfast and dinner taken in the hotel
  • Services of a dedicated ramblers Walking Holidays leader
  • All transport to complete the walking programme as described in the itinerary
  • Entrance fees (unless otherwise specified)
  • Personal expenses (such as your bar bill)
  • Discretionary tips
  • Optional excursions
  • Travel Insurance

Itinerary & Travel

Itinerary Details

Whilst every effort will be made to adhere to the outlined itinerary and advertised programme, local conditions can change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. This may mean that routes and timings need to be amended or the order of days may change, sometimes at short notice.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we may unfortunately need to withdraw a tour that is currently confirmed to operate and we therefore reserve the right to cancel your booking. We would always do our utmost to give you plenty of notice should we have to do this. Selected elements of this tour, including local attractions and restaurants, may change at late notice. Please ensure you have valid insurance cover before you travel.

Your Itinerary

Day 1

Old Hunstanton

Independent arrival at the Le Strange Arms in Old Hunstanton. Check in is available from 3pm.  Dinner tonight and each evening is taken in the hotel restaurant.

Day 2

Ringstead, Holme and the Peddars Way

Breakfast & Dinner

  • Time

    5 hours

  • Distance

    11.5 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

After breakfast  we walk inland from the hotel passing through Ringstead Downs nature reserve. In season look out for butterflies and various rarer plants. We join the Peddars Way through Ringstead village and continue north to Holme next to the Sea. Oddly the village is next to the sea. From here is a lovely walk through scrub and coastal marsh to the hotel.

Day 3

Wells to Brancaster

Breakfast & Dinner

  • Time

    5.5 hours

  • Distance

    13 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

We start with a public bus journey to Wells. After a quick look  around its off to Holkham gap and one of the finest beaches in Britain. At low tide you can hardly se the sea across the golden sands. We stop at Burnham Overy Staithe and perhaps raise a glass to local lad Horatio Nelson. From here we walk past salt marsh with excellent bird spotting opportunities. At Brancaster we will catch the bus back to the hotel. Please note for those with a fear of heights the maximum altitude we reach on this walk is 12m A.S.L.

Day 4

The Peddars Way

Breakfast & Dinner

  • Time

    5 hours

  • Distance

    11.5 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

In a day of complete contrast we use hired transport to travel inland to the Bartholomew Hills., the highest point on our holiday. Its all down hill from here. First we arrive at Castle Acre, a fascinating village. Its Norman castle and ruined Priory are an unsuspected treasure in such a small village. We continue north passing Harpley Dams before arriving at our pick up point near Amner.

Day 5

Brancaster to Old Hunstanton

Breakfast & Dinner

  • Time

    4 hours

  • Distance

    10 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

Today we complete the missing section of the Norfolk Coast Path. We take the bus back to Brancaster and follow the path back to Old Hunstanton making a detour around Holme to avoid retracing our steps. A fitting way to end our waling programme.

Day 6

Final day

The Ramblers Holidays Charitable Trust

Unlike many tour operators we have our own trust through which RWH Travel’s profits are channelled back into a variety of outdoor, walking-related or environmental conservation projects in the UK. The focus of the Trust’s financial support is Britain’s leading walking charity, The Ramblers, and their role in promoting the benefits and importance of walking to the British public. In addition the Trust welcomes applications for small grants from local organisations in the UK who need support for walking-orientated activities. This includes the establishment of footpaths and bridleways, funding for rebuilding bridges and renovating huts, as well as bursary funding for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for children who could not otherwise afford to do it. Please visit the ‘About Us’ section of our website and click on the Charitable Trust link for more details.

Heart and Sole

We appreciate that we are in a fortunate position to be able to use our profits to help make a difference to people's lives. Heart & Sole is a venture managed by our office staff, whose aim is to reach the heart of the communities in the countries we visit. Through Heart & Sole, we hope to make more of a long term, direct impact to these communities, particularly in less developed countries where even a small amount goes a long way. See our website for more information and details of some of the projects we support.

Staying In Touch
