Walking grade

Grade 4

This is a Grade 4 holiday which includes walks with little ascent and descent. The highest point reached on the walk is around 50m above sea level. The paths are mostly good, but there may be some muddy or wet sections particularly in the winter months. Although ascent and descent is minimal some walks may be longer than might be expected at Grade 4.

Please note that mobile phone signal is very patchy in the area and a phone signal is not guaranteed.

Classic Collection

Thoughtfully designed, meticulously planned, carefully graded, and expertly guided walking tours and hiking holidays along well-loved and off-the-beaten-track footpaths.

Overview

Holiday Highlights

  • Mile after mile of sandy beaches.
  • Superbly located hotel with lawns leading down to the beach.
  • Endless nature spotting possibilities. Look out for seals and wading birds.
  • The Avocet; adorning the RSPB logo, spotting one is a real treat.
  • Coastal walking in abundance with big skies and sea views.

Subtle charm perhaps best describes Norfolk’s delights. Renowned for some of the longest expanses of sandy beach in the country. Pretty villages, secret inlets, islands and marshes the coast will not disappoint. Most of the walks you will experience will be along the Norfolk Coast Path National Trail with one day involving a small amount of inland walking on the Peddars Way.

From the hotel, located next to the beach, you can walk out to Gore Point. Beach, sea and sky mingle into one on this excellent introductory stroll. Unlike coastal walking in much of the UK, in Norfolk don’t worry too much about the steepness of the paths, just enjoy the view and take in the big skies. You'll also explore further east with a classic walk from Wells to Burnham Deepdale, quite possibly the most picturesque and varied section on the whole Coast path.

Enjoy beautiful views of cliff tops, sandy beaches, windmills and salt marshes. Spend time in an area where many artists and photographers admire the peaceful views and where many wildlife enthusiasts spot migrating birds and sea life. Take the time to really get away from it all.

There is a small amount of inland walking on today's walk (approximately 1.5 miles) however the majority is coastal walking on the Norfolk Coast Path National Trail and part of the Peddars Way, walking along tracks, minor roads, footpaths and sandy beaches.

The walk offers extensive sea views across the salt marsh with excellent bird spotting opportunities. You may be able to view the wild birds feeding along the shoreline or on the salt marsh. You will also have views today of the red and white cliffs of Hunstanton as the walk approaches closer to journeys end. The famous red and white striped cliffs at Hunstanton are an eye-catching attraction due to the unusual colours of the rock.

From here is a lovely walk through scrub and coastal marsh back to the hotel.

After breakfast, your private coach transport will be waiting outside your hotel to take you to the start of today's walk at Cley-next-the-Sea. The start of the walk will give you a good view of the beautiful Cley Windmill (which has been converted to offer residential accommodation).

You will walk along the coast today in the direction of Blakeney until you reach Wells-next-the-Sea. This walk offers expansive views across the salt marshes to the sea. As the tide ebbs and flows out of the creeks, a rich feeding ground for wild birds is revealed. A variety of very picturesque small harbours and quays are passed today.

There may be some time to have a look around the beautiful seaside town of Wells-next-the-Sea before you catch the Coastliner public bus back to the hotel.

Alternatively, for a slightly longer extension, you can start the walk at the bus interchange in Hunstanton, which is 1.2 miles from the hotel.

This walk offers extensive views across the Wash to the Lincolnshire coastline and involves walking on sandy beaches, promenades and minor roads. On a clear day, you may be able to view (with binoculars) Boston Stump (St Botolph's Church) and the Skegness Big Wheel.

When you arrive at Hunstanton, you can walk under or pass Hunstanton pier and perhaps have the chance to search for fossils below the distinctive red cliffs. The walk takes you directly to your hotel.

As this is a shorter day today, there is the opportunity for an optional extension walk from the hotel along the sand dunes to Gore Point and return. This walk can be discussed with you the evening before at the leader's briefing. The optional walk can add an extra 5 miles to your day.

Day 5

Wells-next-the-Sea to Burnham Deepdale (Norfolk Coast Path)

Accommodation

  • Time

    4 hours

  • Distance

The final walk day completes the missing section of the Norfolk Coast Path. You will take the bus back to Wells-next-the-Sea and follow the Norfolk Coast Path National Trail towards Hunstanton but stopping at Burnham Deepdale, before catching a public bus back to the hotel.

Walk along the coast and take in the views of miles of sandy beaches, stopping by at small coastal villages with their quaint harbours. A fitting way to end your walking programme with a walk of great variety.

Please note if walking in the summer and the weather during your holiday is favourable, there is very little shade for most of the walk so don't forget your sunscreen.

Water To Go

Opting for filtered water from a reusable bottle with its built-in water filter, like the Water-to-go bottle available at www.watertogo.eu, is a sustainable alternative to single-use sealed water bottles. Simply refill it from any water source and contribute to saving the environment from disposable plastic bottles.

Exciting news: Water-to-go has introduced two new bottles to their collection. The Active bottle is designed to fit bike water bottle holders, and the Sugarcane bottle is an even more planet-friendly option. Crafted from fibrous cane, a by-product of liquid extraction, it undergoes a process to create plant-based plastic. Explore the details on the Water-to-Go website for this innovative new range.

As a token of appreciation for your commitment to the environment, we've secured an exclusive 15% discount with Water-to-Go for you. Visit www.watertogo.eu and use the code RWH17 during your order.

The primary focus of our Trust's financial support is directed towards Britain's premier walking charity, The Ramblers. They play a crucial role in advocating the benefits and significance of walking to the British public. Additionally, our Trust invites applications for small grants from local organizations in the UK that require support for walking-oriented activities. This encompasses initiatives such as establishing footpaths and bridleways, funding for the reconstruction of bridges and refurbishing huts, and bursary funding for organisations that support individuals to enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors..

For more comprehensive details, please visit the 'About' section on our website and click on the Charitable Trust link. Your choice to travel with us goes beyond a memorable vacation; it contributes to meaningful projects that have a positive impact on our community and environment.

Heart and Sole

We appreciate that we are in a fortunate position to be able to use our profits to help make a difference to people's lives. Heart & Sole is a venture managed by our office staff, whose aim is to reach the heart of the communities in the countries we visit. Through Heart & Sole, we hope to make more of a long term, direct impact to these communities, particularly in less developed countries where even a small amount goes a long way. See our website for more information and details of some of the projects we support.

Staying In Touch
