Grade 5

Grade 6

The walker’s haven that is La Palma offers a wide variety of walking which is perfect for our 2 Grade, 2 Leaders, 2 Walks option at a Grades 5 and 6. On the East of the island paths are greener through forests where on the West the island is much more barren.

Some walks will have longer descents that can be towards 1000m especially on the Grade 6 walk.  The paths we take are rough and steep at times, but will be taken at a pace appropriate to the grade of the walk. The higher the grade walking programmes the higher ascents and duration will be. It is important to note that some walks maybe difficult for those affected by vertigo. The maximum altitude reached on either grade is over 2,400m.

Accommodation

While you're in La Palma, you have a plethora of walking options to explore. There are so many, it's impossible to cover them all. Here's a curated selection of walks to provide you with a glimpse of the diverse experiences awaiting you.

  • Time

    3.5 hours

  • Distance

    6.2 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

    350m

San Antonio Volcano (Grade 5)

Today, you embark on a hired bus ride to the quaint village of ‘Montes de Luna’. From here, you follow a gently rising and falling pathway that contours the southern part of the island, leading you to Fuencaliente. Pause for coffee in a charming bar before descending to the San Antonio Volcano. Explore the rim, watch an insightful film in the Visitor Centre, and marvel at the volcano's 1600s formation, now safe with protective handrails. Your group gazes upon even younger volcanoes (the youngest erupted in 2021) before returning to the Visitor Centre. After lunch, another short walk awaits.

  • Time

    4 hours

  • Distance

    8.6 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

    150/850m

San Antonio Volcano (Grade 6)

Your day starts similarly to the Grade 5 walk. After lunch, continue the journey down the island, passing even more volcanoes. Eventually, you'll reach 'Faro' (lighthouse), home to a small museum and a bar offering craft beers and cakes from the island.

  • Time

    5 hours

  • Distance

    7.1 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

    700m

Ruta de los Volcanes (Grade 5)

Today, you dive into serious hikes along the 'spine' of the island. A taxi whisks you up the mountain road to the 'El Pilar' pass at approximately 1,450 meters above sea level, serving as the starting point for your walks. Both groups embark on a hike, each at its own pace, ascending onto the spine. Begin on the GR path from the pass, treating yourself to breathtaking views of the entire Taburiente caldera to the north. If luck is on your side, witness the 'Mar des Nubes' (sea of clouds) below, which you'll hopefully be above at this stage. Continue over the peak of Barquita, descend to the 'Hoyo Negro' crater, and then ascend to Pico Nambroque, your main target for the day. The return journey follows the main GR footpath all the way back to El Pilar for your return transfer.

  • Time

    5.5 hours

  • Distance

    11.1 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

    700/1400m

Ruta de los Volcanes (Grade 6)

You follow the initial route of the Grade 5 walk before diverging from the GR path at the pass. Staying on the GR path, you skip the first peaks and the ‘Hoyo Negro' crater, heading towards the striking ‘Volcan de la Deseada'—the highest volcano on the spine. The (safe) ascent to the rim is truly unforgettable, offering breathtaking 360-degree views. Descend south, remaining on the spine, to reach the ‘View of Views'—gazing south to the Volcan de St Martin and, on clear days, the sea and islands of Tenerife, El Hierro, and La Gomera. A gradual descent to Fuencaliente concludes this 18km classic walk, leading to your return transfer.

  • Distance

    6.6 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

    281/750m

Laurisilva Forest (Grade 5)

Starting from a drop-off point at 1200m, you enter a woodland micro-climate, encountering birds and butterflies on the way to the main viewpoint just under 1500m. Progressing on forest tracks, you arrive at the El Pilar leisure area, where a Visitor Centre features a video about La Palma.

  • Distance

    7.5 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

    450/850m

Laurisilva Forest (Grade 6)

Start your day following the Grade 5 route before branching off. Opting for the longer route to El Pilar, with the group having plenty of time to descend gradually.

  • Distance

    5.3 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

    650/289m

Highest Point and Observatories (Grade 5)

Take on a spectacular walk, best enjoyed in favourable weather. Starting at 1900m, you swiftly reach the largest caldera rim for a refreshing drinks stop. Following just below the ridge, you'll be treated to ever-changing, impressive views on both sides. Moving along the rim, you'll encounter a series of peaks until reaching your destination and the bus collection point. Both groups will relish time on the summit before returning to the hotel.

  • Distance

    6.3 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

    900/440m

Highest Point and Observatories (Grade 6)

You'll venture beyond Grade 5, descending slightly into the caldera before conquering the island's highest point at 2426m. Surrounding you will be radio and observational telescopes of various types. Both groups will have the opportunity to savour the summit experience before returning to the hotel.

Rest day

You'll have a free day in La Palma—perfect for exploring Santa Cruz or consulting your leader for a recommended unguided walk.

All the details you need

Holiday Grade

The walker’s haven that is La Palma offers a wide variety of walking which is perfect for our 2 Grade, 2 Leaders, 2 Walks option at a Grades 5 and 6. On the East of the island paths are greener through forests where on the West the island is much more barren.

Each day we will walk up to 6 hours with cumulative daily ascents and descents in the range of 750m depending on the grade of walk you choose to do.

Please ensure you read the Proposed Itinerary carefully to best gauge the walking technicalities.

Walks & Excursions

Generally walks will be up to 6 hours duration, with some energetic days and some easier or rest days. Some of the volcanic rock can be rough underfoot, so walking boots are essential. There are some long descents over occasionally loose surfaces. You may also find it useful to bring walking poles.

Two Grades, Two Leaders, Two Walks

On ‘2x Walks, 2x Leaders, 2x Grades’ departures, where we provide two tour leaders and offer a choice of easier or harder walks each day, we hope to be able to accommodate your choice of walk. However, safety considerations do govern the sizes of groups in each walking grade; the minimum number of participants for a guided walk at a given grade and the maximum group size will be as indicated for the walk grade.

On most departures we are able to accommodate most clients' first choice of walk most of the time, however some flexibility and co-operation may be required. In unusual circumstances where a disproportionately high number of clients wish to walk at one grade, for safety reasons, we may not be able to provide you with your choice of walk each day. Although we will endeavour to accommodate as many clients’ choices as possible, it may be necessary for you to switch between higher and lower grade walks during the holiday. Any decision regarding group sizes and the participants in the day’s walking programme rests with our tour leader(s).

For safety reasons the minimum number of participants on a walk will be 4 plus the leader.

Local Transport Costs

In the holiday cost, we've included all local transport expenses related to the advertised activity programme for your convenience. If there are additional visits or excursions to enrich your experience, you can choose to participate and cover the costs locally. Depending on the itinerary, local transport may involve a mix of private hire coaches, taxis, local buses, and ferries.

Optional Excursions

At your destination, you may have the option to book various local excursions and activities through a local operator. It's important to note that we are not involved in these activities or excursions, and we do not operate, supervise, or control them in any way. Your contract will be directly with the local activity supplier, and we bear no responsibility for their actions or omissions.

Spending Money

Holiday Budgeting

As you plan your holiday budget, it's essential to account for expenses such as drinks, meals not covered in the holiday price, entrance fees not included, optional local excursions, and any souvenirs or additional services like laundry. For a rough estimate, budgeting around £10-£20 per person per day for lunches and drinks is a helpful guideline.

Currency in Spain

The currency in Spain is the euro. You may wish to take some euro cash with you until you reach an ATM. Credit cards may not be accepted in smaller towns and rural areas.

Holiday Currency

Should you need to get cash out the is an ATM in the lobby of the hotel. There are also banks in Santa Cruz open Monday - Friday 9am - 2pm. There is also a cash machine in the wall of the Tourist Office on the sea front just a five minute walk away from the hotel.

Passports and Visas

European Passport Advice

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must meet the Schengen area rules.

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

For some Schengen countries your passport may need to be less than 10 years old during your whole visit, and the 3 months at the end of your visit may need to be within 10 years of your passport’s issue date.

Check both the issue date and the expiry date in your passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old.

Non British Passport holders should consult the host country’s embassy for applicable passport and visa entry requirements.

Meals

After a full day’s walk, in the evenings when our extensive buffet dinner has finished, a relaxing stroll along the coastal path and a drink in a local bar make the perfect end to the day.

Locally you will find all the amenities nearby that will make your stay nice and easy. Just next door is a SPAR shop, perfect for buying those much needed packed lunch supplies and not far beyond that is a pharmacy should you unfortunately need it.

Breakfasts and dinners are taken in the hotel from a very well presented and comprehensive buffet. Breakfasts have everything on offer from cereal and fresh fruit to hot selections and Prosecco!

Dinners are as equally well supplied, perfect for refuelling after a day's walking.

Simply refill it from any water source and contribute to saving the environment from disposable plastic bottles.

Exciting news: Water-to-go has introduced two new bottles to their collection. The Active bottle is designed to fit bike water bottle holders, and the Sugarcane bottle is an even more planet-friendly option. Crafted from fibrous cane, a by-product of liquid extraction, it undergoes a process to create plant-based plastic. Explore the details on the Water-to-Go website for this innovative new range.

As a token of appreciation for your commitment to the environment, we've secured an exclusive 15% discount with Water-to-Go for you. Visit www.watertogo.eu and use the code RWH17 during your order.

Be aware, though, that this coverage will no longer extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. In case you don't have a valid EHIC, you can apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will replace the EHIC as it gets phased out.

It's essential to emphasize that the EHIC/GHIC, while valuable, should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive medical or travel insurance. For your peace of mind and comprehensive coverage, considering additional insurance is highly recommended.

Personal Safety

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office is your go-to for the latest info on security, local laws, and the nitty-gritty of passports and visas at www.gov.uk/travelaware. Make sure to take a quick peek at the current advice for your upcoming destination—it'll only take a few minutes.

When you're out and about, stay aware of your surroundings. Take smart precautions with your credit cards and passport, and maybe tone down the flashy accessories. Less is more, especially when it comes to carrying cash—just enough for the day will do. Consider using a money belt for that extra layer of security. Stay alert, stay safe, and make the most of your travels!

Cultural Awareness

Responsible Travel

We are dedicated to promoting responsible travel practices that prioritise the well-being of both the environment and local communities. We believe in the transformative power of travel and aim to minimize our ecological footprint by selecting eco-friendly accommodations, encouraging waste reduction, and supporting sustainable transportation options where possible. Our walking tours are designed to immerse participants in the local culture, fostering meaningful connections with the communities we visit. We strive to leave a positive impact by engaging in responsible tourism activities, respecting local customs, and contributing to the preservation of natural landscapes. Through our commitment to responsible travel, we aim to create enriching experiences for our guests while actively contributing to the conservation of the destinations we explore.

The Ramble Worldwide Outdoor Trust

Unlike many other tour operators, we take pride in our unique approach. Ramble Worldwide channels its surplus profits back into various outdoor, walking-related, or environmental conservation projects in the UK through our own trust. When you choose us, you contribute to this impactful initiative.

The primary focus of our Trust's financial support is directed towards Britain's premier walking charity, The Ramblers. They play a crucial role in advocating the benefits and significance of walking to the British public. Additionally, our Trust invites applications for small grants from local organizations in the UK that require support for walking-oriented activities. This encompasses initiatives such as establishing footpaths and bridleways, funding for the reconstruction of bridges and refurbishing huts, and bursary funding for organisations that support individuals to enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors..

For more comprehensive details, please visit the 'About' section on our website and click on the Charitable Trust link. Your choice to travel with us goes beyond a memorable vacation; it contributes to meaningful projects that have a positive impact on our community and environment.

Heart and Sole

We appreciate that we are in a fortunate position to be able to use our profits to help make a difference to people's lives. Heart & Sole is a venture managed by our office staff, whose aim is to reach the heart of the communities in the countries we visit. Through Heart & Sole, we hope to make more of a long term, direct impact to these communities, particularly in less developed countries where even a small amount goes a long way. See our website for more information and details of some of the projects we support.

Staying In Touch

Mobile Phones

Kindly share a mobile phone contact number with us. We'll utilize this solely for crucial communication pertaining to your holiday arrangements.

Ensure your mobile phone remains switched on and easily accessible when en route to the airport or during transit delays. This way, we can promptly reach you with any last-minute updates concerning your travel plans.

In consideration of others, we request that you switch off your mobile phone during walks or make an effort to limit its usage. Additionally, during group meals, please minimize the use of mobile devices. Your cooperation ensures a seamless and enjoyable experience for everyone on the journey.
