Enjoy the contrasting beauty of the island of Corsica on this one week guided walking holiday based in Calvi.

Guided Walking Holidays Calvi - Corsica

Walking along coastal paths where soft sand meets rugged beauty, it is clear to see why the ancient Greeks described Corsica as ‘kalliste’ - the beautiful. From the moment you absorb the aroma of your first morning coffee, you can gaze over eye-widening panoramic views and appreciate why the island has been coveted throughout history. Experience it all with Ramblers Walking Holidays.

Your path ahead will take you through fascinating villages giving ample opportunity to soak up and experience a rich blend of Mediterranean and Corsican culture. Throughout your visit you will see history dating back to when greats such as Napoleon resided, to the more modern areas such as the marina, popular with the glitterati of the 1950s.

Our walking programme is a mix of coastal and mountain routes. Starting with an easy coastal stroll through the maquis with cistus and wild rosemary making a pleasant accompaniment. During the week we walk through rural Corsican villages unchanged for hundreds of years, past churches, monasteries and chapels, ruined villages, and up into the mountains to alpine huts with marvellous views. It’s a week of fantastic contrast. The bird life of the island might be of particular interest with many of our walks being closely watched by the Black and Red Kites soaring above us, easily recognised by their forked tails.

The town of Calvi is compact and full of interest. From the Citadel roads wind down through the town to the harbour where the ‘beautiful people’ moor their yachts and stroll along the waterfront. A great venue to spend some time enjoying your dinner in local restaurants.

This departure: Grade 6

  1. Day 1

Fly from the UK to Corsica. Transfer by road to the Grand Hotel in Calvi. Depending on flight arrival times there should be time on arrival for an intriguing historical walk with the leader round Calvi and its imposing Citadel. Find out about the towns historical links with great figures like Columbus, Napoleon and Nelson. And yes, this is where the latter lost his eye!

  2. Day 2

Notre Dame de la Serra and the Rivellatta Peninsula - A leisurely start to the walking programme with a long but easy coastal walk from Calvi itself. A short morning climb leads to the beautifully situated chapel of Notre Dame de la Serra with its famous view of the lovely horseshoe shaped Calvi bay. A gentle descent to the coast and out along the Rivellatta headland to the dramatic cliff top lighthouse takes us to a shady picnic lunch overlooking the sea. Return in the afternoon on the delightful coastal path, the Sentier Litoral, which leads back to Calvi via a swimming and refreshment opportunity in the charming little bay of Alga. 16km and 400 metres of ascent and descent To really help set the scene before your holiday why not read 'Time is the Assassin' by Michel Bussi which really depicts this days walking area throughout the whole book.

  3. Day 3

The Balagna Villages from Lumio to San Antonino - A varied and interesting wander through the hill country of Balagna. A short morning bus ride takes us to Lumio from where we climb to the striking deserted village of Occi. Easy tracks and paths take us on via Lavateggio to the quiet village of Aregno for lunch in the village square. A short climb after lunch is followed by a long gentle descent to the superb sandy beach of Aregno for another chance to swim and relax before catching the charming local train back from Algajola to Calvi. 16k and 500m of ascent/700m of descent

  4. Day 4

Circular Walk from Calenzana - Coast, hills, villages and now mountains. A twenty minute coach ride takes us to Calenzana, the starting point of the famous GR 20 long distance trail. We do not have 17 days to spare to complete this great walk but the fine circuit above the village, using sections of the GR 20 and the equally beautiful Mar e Monte trail, gives you a delightful taster of the quality of scenery and walking which they offer. After an initial steep ascent on the GR 20 we leave the back packers to the big climb and branch off on the Mar e Monte before circling back to the starting point on gentler local footpaths to finish with refreshments in the  GR 20 pub. 12 kilometres and 600m of ascent and descent

  5. Day 5

Free day - A day to enjoy the lovely coastal area of Calvi. Many book the superb local boat trips from the key front near the hotel, others simply enjoy wandering along the long expanse of Calvi beach taking in a good fish lunch. A few hardy types may take themselves off into the hills for another fine hard walk. The leader will not be short of ideas for fine things for you to do.

  6. Day 6

The Balagna Villages from L´Isle Rousse to Pigna - Another chance to explore the maze of old trails linking the hill villages of this striking landscape and visit the two most famous villages. An early start on the local train allows time to explore the weekly market in the resort of L'Isle Rousse before walking up to the tranquil village of Occigliani for picnic refreshments in the tiny square. Broad easy tracks lead on upwards to lunch in the dramatically perched hill top village of Sant Antonino, officially declared one of the most beautiful villages of France. You will have time to explore this spectacular village and the equally pretty and much quieter village of Pigna before descending to the coast at Algajola again. And of course there will be ample time for swimming and ice cream before the train whisks you home again to Calvi. 16 kilometres and 500m if ascent and descent

  7. Day 7

Bonifato and the Melaghia Valley - A return coach ride to Bonifato allows a grand finale. A magnificent mountain walk on well graded paths in the cirque above the forest. The path up to the Melaghia Valley is a variant of the GR 20 but despite the long climb is remarkably straightforward as the path is beautifully constructed. And the views of both coast and mountains are unmatchable. After picknicking shadily in the trees by the river above 1000 metres on the trail to the Orbu refuge, more splendidly engineered tracks circle back down the starting point at the pleasant mountain inn in Benifato. A grand end to the week. 12 kilometres and 700 metres of ascent and descent

  8. Day 8

It is time to bid farewell to the truly remarkable landscapes and people that make up Corsica as we head to the airport for our flight home.
