Discover Collection

Meticulously curated, guided walking holiday itineraries that delve into the culture, wildlife, cuisine, and rich history of the world.

Overview

Holiday Highlights

  • The perfect introduction to trekking and wildlife, across the mountains and plains of Nepal.
  • Wildlife viewing in Chitwan National Park by jeep, on foot and canoe. The best of mountain trekking and rural Nepal.
  • End the afternoon with the setting sun over the Annapurna range; grab a drink and recount the highlights of the day.
  • Local guides and RW leader for greater support when trekking, plus specialist insights into Nepal and its people.
  • Enjoy dinner with a former Gurkha soldier to hear something of life in the Gurkhas.
  • Water to Go filter water bottle supplied limiting plastic waste.

A trekkers' paradise, Nepal combines Himalayan views, golden temples, rural hill villages and jungle wildlife to offer one of the world's great travel destinations. Spend days in the mountains, gazing out at views too beautiful to put into words, and have your own David Attenborough wildlife moments in Chitwan National Park.

This tour is the perfect introduction to Nepal, covering two important aspects – epic Himalayan walking and the chance to observe elephant, rhinoceros, wild boar, monkey, sloth bear and potentially the Royal Bengal Tiger. You are very likely to see tiger footprints but realistically very few tourists see tigers in the flesh.

One of the biggest issues most people face when they visit Nepal is having a big enough memory card to capture the sheer magnificence of the Annapurna Range. That explains why people return time and time again.

You have a brief time in Kathmandu before driving to Pokhara along the main highway through Nepal. After a night in Pokhara, you’ll take transport to Nayapul and start walking into the Himalayan foothills. You then head through Tikhedunga, Gorepani, Tadapani, Ghandruk and back to Nayapul. Here you will walk under the Annapurna massif, featuring an 8000m peak, and imaginative names like Annapurna I, II, III and IV. However, the jewel in the crown is Machapuchare, ‘Fish Tail Mountain’, a minnow at 7000m but as distinctive as the Matterhorn. These are memorable views that accompany us everywhere on our trek.

South of Nepal's mountains lies something completely different: Chitwan National Park where nature buffs can scan the subtropical treetops for exotic bird species and comb the jungles for rhino, tigers and crocodiles. You'll enjoy a jeep safari, with an excellent chance of seeing rhino, and a canoe ride along the Rapti River to observe rare species of crocodiles and bird life, before witnessing a glorious sunset from the river. This is a memorable finale to an outstanding holiday showcasing Nepal at its very best.

Highlights include Durbar Square and Swayambhunath, magnificently set on a hill top just outside the city. Swayambhunath is known as the monkey temple. The reason for this will be obvious on arrival. This is an important place of worship for both Hindus and Buddhists. Kathmandu's Durbar Square is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley. Here you will find some of the best examples of the local architecture. It is still possible to see the after effects of the 2015 earthquake but Nepal has done a wonderful job with reconstruction.

We continue to climb through the rhododendron forest, along flag-stone steps, before reaching Ghorepani, a classic Himalayan settlement with outstanding views of the mountains. Hopefully we can enjoy the amazing panorama of Dhaulagiri I (8167m), Annapurna I (8091m), Nilgiri (7061m), Machhapuchhre (6993m), and other snow-clad peaks. After enjoying the sunrise and illuminated views, you head back to Ghorepani for a warm breakfast having enjoyed one of the finest mountain vistas in the world. Nothing can prepare you for Annapurna views, they truly are some of Mother Nature's finest work. We then walk through the beautiful rhododendron forest to reach Tadapani (2590m). Day 11

Chitwan

Accommodation

We have plenty of time in Chitwan National Park so the pace will be leisurely, hopefully we can enjoy some outstanding wildlife encounters. During our time in the park, we will take a jeep safari which offers the finest (and safest) chance of observing rhino in the wild. Fear not, sightings are common. We will have a local guide from our lodge come on the safari with us to look out for and explain about the wildlife we see. Our jeeps have raised seats in the back and a removable rain cover. If the weather is good this can be dispensed with giving fantastic all-round vision. We will also enjoy a canoe trip along the river which is the perfect way to observe how varied Nepal's bird life is. This is a thoroughly enjoyable day and a vast contrast to your previous days on foot in the mountains. A pair of binoculars will greatly increase the enjoyment today.

Annapurna & Chitwan Tea Huts

Tea huts are a classic Nepali institution that are effectively simple hostels run by friendly locals. Staying in one arguably offers the chance to experience the area in a more connected way than can be found through hotel accommodation. They vary in standard, each with its own unique setting and offer ever improving accommodation, good food, warmth and shelter and there is always a great welcome. Breakfast and dinner are taken in the houses. Many have electricity but, in others, dinner will be by romantic candlelight!

Most teahouses will have facilities for charging phones/cameras and typically charge about £1 per hour.

Blankets are supplied in tea huts, but the supply is limited and cannot be guaranteed. You should definitely consider bringing a 2-3 season sleeping bag or hire one in Kathmandu on arrival. Walks & Excursions

Local Transport Costs

In the holiday cost, we've included all local transport expenses related to the advertised activity programme for your convenience. If there are additional visits or excursions to enrich your experience, you can choose to participate and cover the costs locally. Depending on the itinerary, local transport may involve a mix of private hire coaches, taxis, local buses, and ferries.

Optional Excursions

At your destination, you may have the option to book various local excursions and activities through a local operator. It's important to note that we are not involved in these activities or excursions, and we do not operate, supervise, or control them in any way. Your contract will be directly with the local activity supplier, and we bear no responsibility for their actions or omissions.

Spending Money

Holiday Budgeting

When budgeting for your holiday, you will need to consider drinks, any meals not included in the holiday price, non-included entrance fees, optional excursions you may choose to participate in locally and any souvenirs or additional services such as laundry. A general guideline for snacks and drinks is £5-£10 per person per day. This is a full board tour so no need to account for lunches.

Currency in Nepal

Nepalese Rupee.
It is probably most convenient to chnage money in the hotel on arrival in Kathmandu. The rates will not be the best but perhaps the convenience outweighs the cost.  There is also a money-changing booth at the airport before immigration which offers reasonable rates. Money can also be changed on the first day's sightseeing.

Sterling cash is freely exchangeable, as are US dollars and euro. It is now becoming possible to change money whilst on the trek, please discuss with your RWH Travel leader. Change is in short supply in the mountains so bring rupees in small denomination notes from the cities. Many hotels accept credit cards, check locally. There are ATM machines in towns and cities.

Nepalese Rupees can only be purchased once in Nepal and the export of Nepalese currency is illegal. You should remember to keep all exchange receipts as if you have any rupees left over when you get to Kathmandu Airport, you can change back up to 15% of the total amount you have changed during the holiday.

Tipping

In your holiday price, we've included tipping for our local suppliers, covering hotel and restaurant staff, local guides, and drivers. Should you wish to make an extra contribution for a specific service, this should be given directly to the recipient at your discretion.

Tour Leaders & Local Guides

Tour Leaders

Your tour leader plays a crucial role in enhancing your holiday experience, and they share your passion for exploring the world on foot. In addition to being resourceful and organised they are also well-travelled and deeply enthusiastic about showing you new destinations.  Your tour leader takes care of all the local administration, ensuring you can fully enjoy your holiday without worrying about the logistics. While leading group holidays, they always keep in mind that each group is composed of individuals. Each tour leader brings their unique style, talents, and professional background to the table. Rest assured, they are all trained, qualified, experienced, and dedicated to making your holiday as enjoyable, interesting, and inspiring as possible. Remember, your leader, while on holiday, is your first port of call for any issues, ensuring a smooth and worry-free experience for you.

Leader's Evening Briefing

Each evening, your tour leader will meet with you to review the programme for the next day. This is your chance to discuss details and ensure that the planned activities align with your walking ability. If you have any concerns about clothing or equipment, feel free to bring them up during this discussion. If, for any reason, you prefer not to participate in the organised group programme, please inform your leader. Your preferences are important, and your leader is there to make sure your experience aligns with your expectations.

Passports and Visas

Passport Information for Nepal

A passport is required plus a Nepalese entry visa for holders of British passports visiting Nepal. Passports must be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival. Holders of non-British passports should check with the Nepalese Embassy or their nearest consulate regarding visa requirements. Visas are also obtainable from the Nepalese embassy in London before you travel. They can be obtained by post or personal visit. The cost of the visa at present is £25.

For details of obtaining visas in London please consult the Nepalese embassy website:

Embassy of Nepal
Tel: +44 (0)207 229 1594
12A Kensington Palace Gardens
London W8 4QU
E-mail: eon@nepembassy.org.uk
Web: https://uk.nepalembassy.gov.np/visa/

The visa procedure has recently (August 2023) been updated. Please consult the above weblink for the latest details. For the address in Nepal please use the first hotel you stay in in Nepal.

Entry visas may be issued at the airport on arrival in Nepal, however this option involves excessive waiting, delaying yourself and fellow party members. The visa issued is the same as the one you obtain in the UK. It can make passing through immigration at Kathmandu Airport stressful and time consuming if you do not have a visa. A passport size photograph and the correct amount of cash are required for the visa on arrival.

Two passport photos as well as a photocopy of your passport details page are required for your trekking permit. We recommend you bring four passport photos with you to Nepal. The price of your trekking permit is included in the holiday price and will be obtained on your behalf by our local agent.

Meals

All meals are provided throughout the holiday starting with dinner on Day 2 and ending with breakfast on Day 14. Vegetarians are easily catered for in hotels and tea huts. In hotels breakfasts will be buffet style with plenty of choice. Dinners are commonly buffet as well with choices of meat and vegetable dishes to suit every taste.

In the mountains the food has a lot in common with Tibetan cuisine whilst in the foothills Indian influence is stronger. The staple of Nepali food is is dahl bhaat, a lentil stew served with rice. It is typically served up on a plate with green veg, relish and a meat dish (if required) possibly goat or buffalo but never beef. You will be offered it everywhere in large quantities. Momos will also appear on menus as starters, again in various flavours. Coffee is becoming common in Nepal with flat whites and the like available to those who feel they can't do without. Foreign wines are available at western prices but the local beers are generally good and reasonably priced. Perhaps they taste at their best after hiking up a mountain.

Sometimes you might prefer to avoid carrying the extra weight. Your tour leader will always be happy to advise which days it will be particularly useful to take them.

On trek your belongings should be carried in a soft kit bag. This allows porters to carry you bags in comfort. If you prefer to bring a suitcase to Nepal, please bring a kit bag as well in the suitcase so your personal kit on trek can be transferred to the kit bag for the duration of the trek. Just fill up from any water source and save the environment from disposable plastic bottles. We have included a bottle for everyone who books on this trip to avoid the use of single use plastic bottles. Normally these bottles will be handed out on arrival in country. Please use this water bottle any time you drink un-bottled water. This will go a long way to help avoiding any issues with sickness.

It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.

The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses (including the consequences of a Covid positive test result), mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.

Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.

In the event that you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.

Cultural Awareness

Responsible Travel

We are dedicated to promoting responsible travel practices that prioritise the well-being of both the environment and local communities. We believe in the transformative power of travel and aim to minimize our ecological footprint by selecting eco-friendly accommodations, encouraging waste reduction, and supporting sustainable transportation options where possible. Our walking tours are designed to immerse participants in the local culture, fostering meaningful connections with the communities we visit. We strive to leave a positive impact by engaging in responsible tourism activities, respecting local customs, and contributing to the preservation of natural landscapes. Through our commitment to responsible travel, we aim to create enriching experiences for our guests while actively contributing to the conservation of the destinations we explore.

The Ramble Worldwide Outdoor Trust

Unlike many other tour operators, we take pride in our unique approach. Ramble Worldwide channels its surplus profits back into various outdoor, walking-related, or environmental conservation projects in the UK through our own trust. When you choose us, you contribute to this impactful initiative.

The primary focus of our Trust's financial support is directed towards Britain's premier walking charity, The Ramblers. They play a crucial role in advocating the benefits and significance of walking to the British public. Additionally, our Trust invites applications for small grants from local organizations in the UK that require support for walking-oriented activities. This encompasses initiatives such as establishing footpaths and bridleways, funding for the reconstruction of bridges and refurbishing huts, and bursary funding for organisations that support individuals to enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors..

For more comprehensive details, please visit the 'About' section on our website and click on the Charitable Trust link. Your choice to travel with us goes beyond a memorable vacation; it contributes to meaningful projects that have a positive impact on our community and environment.

Heart and Sole

We appreciate that we are in a fortunate position to be able to use our profits to help make a difference to people's lives. Heart & Sole is a venture managed by our office staff, whose aim is to reach the heart of the communities in the countries we visit. Through Heart & Sole, we hope to make more of a long term, direct impact to these communities, particularly in less developed countries where even a small amount goes a long way. See our website for more information and details of some of the projects we support.

Staying In Touch

Mobile Phones

Kindly share a mobile phone contact number with us. We'll utilize this solely for crucial communication pertaining to your holiday arrangements.

Ensure your mobile phone remains switched on and easily accessible when en route to the airport or during transit delays. This way, we can promptly reach you with any last-minute updates concerning your travel plans.

In consideration of others, we request that you switch off your mobile phone during walks or make an effort to limit its usage. Additionally, during group meals, please minimize the use of mobile devices. Your cooperation ensures a seamless and enjoyable experience for everyone on the journey.
