The Gargano Peninsula

Walking the spur of Italy.
Overview

"Why did it take so long for Ramblers Worldwide to find this place?". you might well ask when you return from this holiday. Well, we hope this tour in the Gargano promontory, the spur on Italy’s heel, more than makes up for the wait.

Italians come to the fabulous beaches here in droves in July and August but for the rest of the year the place is left to discriminating nature lovers and seekers of peace and beauty in the National Park. We stay in Vieste, our hotel is in the old town on a cliff above the Adriatic.

From our base here we walk in woods of Aleppo Pine and Turkey Oak, open meadows, often with views of a sea, which by the coast has many shades of turquoise - turning wine dark to the horizon.

Early season the holidays will focus on enjoying the abundance of orchids and iris that make this one of the best areas in Europe for botanists. Observant orchid lovers could spot up to 50 different species in a good week!

Also within the area of the Gargano National Park are the remarkable limestone Tremiti islands with walking on San Domino, the largest. These islands can be visited in the summer months on a free day.

Weekend walking became more important than a corporate career in management for Julian, so he quit and qualified as a full time tour leader for Ramblers Worldwide Holidays. He believes that it's the best way to discover and observe the world and meet like minded people.
