Camino de Santiago
Further highlights of this historic pilgrims' route.
OverviewOur new holiday between León and Santiago de Compostela is the long-awaited Spanish continuation of our perennially popular Route St Jacques holiday. Pilgrim feet have passed over these trails for a thousand years, their journey culminating in an embrace of the statue of St James. We follow in their footsteps, but taking only the most scenic parts of the route, with our own private coach covering the sections in between that the passing ages have made less attractive.
Our walk is full of the romance of travel, with ever-changing scenery, history and legend our constant companions. We cross the northern meseta to Astorga, pass through the Montes de León and walk by vineyards, entering Galicia in the high and remote village of O’Cebreiro. From here the scenery becomes greener. Our highest point at 1,335m is Alto de Pio, followed by wooded scenery between Triacastela and Sarria, then pasture land. Finally, with history at our heels, we walk the last 3 miles to the cathedral in Santiago. On the majority of the days we walk around 12 miles but with the odd shorter day interspersed.
On the way there are Templar castles, monasteries, Gaudi’s Bishops Palace in Astorga, Roman ruins and Romanesque churches. We have spent many years looking for a holiday to match the Route St Jacques and are delighted that we have at last found it.
Note: The months of July and August can be hot and humid. Please bear in mind that walking may feel above the grade of the holiday during these periods.

John has been a compulsive traveller and walks leader since high school. Having completed the Three Peaks challenge of ascending Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon within 24 hours he's also clearly got an adventurous streak. These days he leads mainly in Greece and Turkey with the odd trip to other destinations which have attracted his attention.![]()
