A New Zealand South Island Walking Adventure
Probably the best South Island walking tour New Zealand has to offer.
OverviewWelcome to the finest of New Zealand’s South Island wilderness and National Parks. Following a circuitous route we start and end this tour in Christchurch. We will explore glaciers, open country, mountains, rainforests; cross lakes, follow wilderness trails, explore sea inlets and more. A truly magnificent trip you’ll be reluctant to end!
We start our tour with an exploration of Christchurch before travelling westwards, where we explore the Fox Glacier area. Carrying on through the Haast Pass we arrive at Wanaka and Mount Aspiring National Park where we’ll walk on the park’s challenging trails. Continuing south we reach Queenstown and walk in the hills and part of the Routeburn Track, before moving on to walk the magnificent Milford Track.
Moving on to Manapouri we spend two days in even more remote Fjordland. Crossing Lake Manapouri and the pass on the other side we reach Deep Cove, the end of the road. Two days are spent in this wonderful area including nearly twenty-four hours on a small cruise boat through Doubtful Sound amongst some of the finest scenery imaginable - this is world heritage country. Small boats allow us to explore the shoreline and enjoy this breathtaking experience.
Joining the real world again we travel on to Omarama in Mount Cook country with time to walk in yet more magnificent National Park country. Recrossing the Canterbury Plains we overnight in Christchurch before our homeward flight and no doubt endless thoughts of the wonders of the last three and a half weeks.
We stay three nights in shared multi-bedded bunkrooms on the Milford Track and one night in twin share accommodation at Milford Sound. You will need to carry a rucksack with your daily needs (there is no porterage) but your main baggage can be left at the Milford track office and they will transfer it to Te Anau, where you stay at the end of the trek. Food is provided at lodges so you do not have to carry it. If you would rather not participate in the Milford Track walk, you can stay at Te Anau and rejoin the group when they arrive after the trek. The nights in Milford Sound and on the Doubtful Sound cruise are in twin-bedded rooms only; there are no single rooms here or on the three-night trek.
Ramblers Worldwide Holidays is one of the few British tour operators licenced by the Department of Conservation to legally operate walking holidays in New Zealand.
