Combine two of South Africa’s top hiking trails with a visit to the Tsitsikamma National Park and come away with an incredible experience of some very varied coastal walking.

This holiday combines two of South Africa’s top hiking trails, the Wild Coast Meander and the Oyster Catcher Trail, with a visit to the Tsitsikamma National Park in between. This all provides an incredible insight into some of South Africa’s ancient history. We walk in areas that have revealed the earliest evidence of human existence, and showcase the beauty of pristine nature, with some of the finest views you are likely to encounter anywhere in the country. On these scenically spectacular walks you will discover varied coastal walking, exciting river crossings and resident wildlife.

We arrive in Cape Town, home to iconic Table Mountain, where we stay for two nights and discover the city sights. Then we fly to East London on the Indian Ocean coast and travel by road to our first hiking trail, The Wild Coast Meander, a 35 mile, five day duration hike that runs along a remote and untouched coast line. The long empty beaches and river estuaries abound with marine life and provide an unsurpassed tranquility.

Our next base is the Tsitsikamma National Park; we stay here two nights and explore the most beautiful indigenous forest. Located between the sea and mountains, it is a place flowing with water, full of lush vegetation, wildlife and spectacular waterfalls. No wonder they call it the Garden of the Garden Route!

Heading further west we arrive at Mossel Bay to start The Oyster Catcher Trail. Our expert guides here will tell us all about the edible and medicinal plants, take us to visit some Khoi San relics and show us how to identify tracks left in the sand. The earliest dated evidence of modern man has been discovered in one of the caves here. On our last day, we end on a high, as we head off for the thrilling wildlife experience of on an afternoon game drive in the Garden Route Game Park, and an opportunity to view the Big Five.

  1. Day 1

We fly from the UK to Cape Town on an overnight flight.

  2. Day 2

On arriving at Cape Town Airport we will transfer to our hotel where we can leave our bags before heading out to explore the city sights. Later we will return to the hotel to check in and relax before dinner.

  3. Day 3

We further explore Cape Town including a visit to Table Mountain, should the weather allow it.

  4. Day 4

Late morning we will depart for Cape Town Airport where we fly to East London Airport on the southeast coast of South Africa. On arrival we take a very scenic four hour transfer to our first hotel on the Wild Coast trail, at the Qora River Mouth.

  5. Day 5

Today we begin our walk along the Wild Coast Meander Trail. This is the shortest walk on this section of the trail, we walk on a forest trail alongside the river (4 miles) to our next hotel. Our luggage will be transported to each of the hotels along the trail.

  6. Day 6

After an early breakfast we will start the walk to our next hotel (12 miles). The route will take us along grassy banks next to the coast with natural springs and long sandy beaches fringed with dune forest.

  7. Day 7

Today's walk (9 miles) takes us across the Qobonqaba River; we can either wade through or be ferried by canoe, one by one. We will enjoy our lunch at the shipwreck of the Jacaranda, whose wrecking is shrouded in controversy.

  8. Day 8

Today we walk the final part of the trail (10.5 miles). We cross the Kei River on a pontoon and walk past the Kei Mouth village. We then climb up to the lighthouse before returning to the beach and onto our final destination on the Wild Coast Trail.

  9. Day 9

We have a full day travelling today. We travel to Tsitsikamma National Park where we stay 2 nights. We spend our time here exploring this delightful area.

  10. Day 10

There are a number of walks that we can enjoy from Tsitsikamma, but we will most likely walk a section of the Otter Trail to a spectacular waterfall. This is 4 miles, other shorter walks may be included in combination with this walk.

  11. Day 11

We travel to Mossel Bay, at the start of the Oyster Catcher Trail. Before dinner a guide will meet us to discuss the programme and trail highlights.

  12. Day 12

We walk from St Blaize to Dana Bay (8 miles) and hike along a well marked path high on a ridge above the thundering ocean and over rocks smoothed by the action of the sea. There is no scrambling involved but care is required. At Dana Bay our transport will be waiting to take us to our cottages where we will stay for the next four nights.

  13. Day 13

Our bus will take us back to Dana Bay to continue on the trail (8 miles). It is all beach and sand dunes today. You may want to bring your swimming costumes as there will be an opportunity to swim in one of the natural pools. Look out for the Oystercatcher’s that make their open and vulnerable nests right on the beach. Our walk finishes by our cottages in Boggamsbaai.

  14. Day 14

Today is the toughest hiking day on the trail; we spend half the day walking on the rocks and half the day walking on the sand (9 miles). There is also a bit of scrambling involved but it is all worth the effort. There is another opportunity to swim in a small private bay. Our bus will be waiting at Kanon Village to take us back to our cottages.

  15. Day 15

We return to Kanon Village to continue the final part of the trail (3 miles). At the end of our trail we will be taken to the Garden Route Game Lodge for lunch and go on a game drive for a chance to see the Big five.
