A fortnight in the Stubai Valley has everything you could wish from a summer holiday in the Alps. The picturesque valley villages, with their window boxes and surrounding hay meadows give way to woodland and high alpine pasture. Here cows roam, the views stretch far away down the valleys, and alpine huts dot the alms. On harder walks the rocky slopes lead to good scrambling to reach some excellent summits. The Stubai Glacier, whose highest point is 3333m, is visible on many walks.

Even with two grades we will never exhaust the almost endless selection of walks on offer. Several of the grade 6 walks take us to ridges and peaks over 2000m, and our grade 8 programme visits mountain huts and peaks around 3000m. We include the Stubai Valley Super Card in the price of the holiday, which enables us to use local cable cars and buses for free. Cable cars to the Kreuzjoch above Fulpmes and the Dresdner Hut at the southern end of the valley open up the magical world of the high Alps to both grades.

Our base is Fulpmes perfectly located in the Stubai Valley. It is just a short journey through the mountains from the beautiful city of Innsbruck which can easily be visited on a free day. Throughout the summer there are various Tirolean evening events and brass band performances to enjoy in Fulpmes.

Our holiday departures on 23 June will be at a more leisurely pace to allow time to appreciate the flora.

This departure: Grade 5/FL

  1. Day 1

Fly from London Heathrow to Munich Airport. On arrival we travel by road 40 minutes to the Aktivhotel Donnerhof, Fulpmes for 7 nights.

  2. Day 2 to 7
We will enjoy a number of walks during our time in the Stubai Valley. Our walks are flexible to allow for group ability and weather conditions. Our days may include one or more of the walks examples below.

The Autenalm Circuit. A lovely, gentle, very scenic, mid-level circuit using the Elfer cable car up to the start of the walk. We wander gently up to the Pinnistal Panoramaweg, around to the main valley and then take a narrower path gently downwards, to find the ancient and very hospitable Autenalm, where we can have lunch. We return to the Elfer top station, on a lovely balcony path, we take the cable car to go down to Neustift, where we pick up the riverside path and walk back to Fulpmes. 9 miles (14.75km) ascent / descent 400m.

The Starkenburger Circuit. A stunning high level walk from the top of the Schlick 2000 cable car system, traversing around the Hohe Burgstal to reach the lunch stop at the Starkenburger Hut, perched high above the valley and giving outstanding all round views of many glaciers and 3000m peaks. We continue on very scenic and gently descending track to the middle station, and take the cable car down before we return to the hotel. We will encounter some narrow paths, sections of scree and moderate exposure enroute to the Starkenburger Hut. 8 miles (12km) ascent 250m / descent 980m.

Pinnistal Panoramaweg. We take the Elfer cable car up, and walk up to the Elfer Hut. From here we pick up and walk along the Panoramaweg at around 2000m, until we are deep in the valley. We drop down to the popular Karalm for lunch and continue along the valley floor a short distance, before taking a gently climbing path back up to the cable car. We descend on the cable car and return to hotel. This walk is on good, well established paths / tracks, some narrower, rockier paths. With truly unforgettable scenery. 7 miles (11.25km) ascent / descent 430m.

A free day will be offered to allow you to further explore the area independently or take a day trip to Innsbruck. The Stubai Super Card is included in the cost of the holiday and benefits include direct access to the four cable car systems in the valley, unlimited use of buses in the valley, travel between Innsbruck and the Stubai Glacier and the Stubai Tram which runs to Innsbruck; as well as various other discounts. This card will be used to travel on local transport when it is required to get to the start of the walks, and you may also wish to make good use of this card on your free day.

  3. Day 8

Transfer by road to Munich Airport for check-in and return flight to London Heathrow.
