Picture yourself in the Forest of Umbra in the heart of this isolated peninsula. Hoopoes flit by and orchids thrive in the meadows amidst chunks of limestone. The scent of Aleppo pine accompanies you descending to the rocky coast dotted with bays only accessible by boat or on foot. Later you follow the weathered rocky paths trodden through the centuries by pilgrims heading for the ancient hill town of Monte Sant’Angelo.
Our base, Vieste, beside the turquoise waters of the Adriatic has since 1991, like the whole Gargano peninsula, been part of a national park.
Whether you visit in the spring after the winter rains have brought forth a profusion of flowers, or in the autumn when the sea is warm, as birds and butterflies accompany your walks; the Gargano Peninsula provides a truly idyllic escape. Don’t forget picnic lunches – a cornucopia of local olives, dried tomatoes and marinated artichokes infused with wild herbs, caciocavallo cheese, and focaccia.

The Hotel Del Seggio enjoys a privileged position amongst the tightly packed buildings of picturesque historic Vieste. Built atop the cliffs looking east across the Adriatic, it has great views and even its’ own private beach, protected by breakwaters a little way offshore. You can wander down the steps (or elevator) to the beach, or take a dip in the outdoor pool (seasonal use) that is set on the sun terraces, that run in stages down to the waters edge.
Light rooms come with en-suite facilities, TV, safe, mini-bar, direct telephone, free Wi-Fi and air conditioning. The restaurant, where we take dinners and breakfasts, has sea views and serves excellent quality local Viestan and Puglian cuisine.
