Well known names but lesser known walking, the Cinque Terre and the Ligurian coast offer some superb coastal views and various grades of walking.

Guided Walking Holidays Riviera Cinque Terre

Look down on rocky coves to where the sea meets steep cliffs and fishing boats bob like corks in the bay. With the sun on your back and the sea before you, you can absorb the views of Portofino renowned as a place frequented by beautiful people, whilst walking little used paths through groves of olive and scrub oak. The land here is steep but fertile. Local specialities include pesto, olives and grapes.

There are many paths through the Cinque Terre, we choose the quieter ones where the fragrant flowers, the shade of the olive groves and the stunning sea views can be enjoyed. We stop in the village of San Fruttuoso before continuing to Portofino harbour for a gelato. Some choose to spend their time on a luxury yacht with a cocktail bar and sun deck, but we really do think they have missed the best of the Cinque Terre.

Holiday Highlights

  • The walk from Madonna di Soviore to Levarto, taking in the northern section of the Cinque Terre footpath.
  • Isola Palmaria. A stroll around an off shore island with great views.
  • Discover lesser trodden paths high above the coast with far-reaching panoramic views.
  • Explore the cobbled streets and twisting alleyways of the Cinque Terre villages.
  • Take the opportunity to swim at lunchtimes when down by the coast.

This departure: Grade 4 and 6

  1. Day 1

We fly to Genoa ('Genova' to the Italians) and drive south along the coast to Sestri Levante. The journey should take about 90 mins.

  2. Day 2

Grade 4 walkers can enjoy a pleasant circular walk out from Sestri Levante taking in Riva, some lovely sea views and a chance to sample some Sestri’s finest ice cream. 10km, 3½ hrs, 500m ascent and descent.
Grade 6 walkers can take the train to Moneglia and walk back to Sestri Levante along the coast. There is a superb panorama just before the Torre Saraceno. Here we are walking over a wild and remote landscape. 14.5km, 6hrs, 625m ascent and descent.

  3. Day 3

Grade 4 walkers might take the train to Corniglia, take a moment to explore the village before climbing up to the tiny hamlet of Volastra. With fabulous views of the Cinque Terre villages, we continue through vineyards and descend to Manarola. 8km, 4hrs, 400m ascent and descent.
Grade 6 walkers will also take the train getting off at Levanto to enjoy some lovely views of the Cinque Terre over Monterosso and Vernazza before descending to Vernazza. At times a high-level path and then onto the Cinque Terre ‘Sentiero Azzurro’ path to Vernazza. 14km, 6hrs, 650m ascent and descent.

  4. Day 4

Grade 4 walkers take the train to La Spezia at the southern end of the Cinque Terre. A ferry ride will take us to the tiny island at the peninsula: the Isola Palmaria where we take a circular walk around the island. The day is completed by an exploration of Portovenere. A ferry trip to Riomaggiore or Manarola completes the day. 7km, 3hrs, 250m ascent and descent.
Grade 6 walkers might walk from Riomaggiore to Portovenere. The walk offers great views and some shade for a hot day through vineyards and woods. 15km, 5 hrs, 650m ascent and descent.

  5. Day 5

This is planned as free day. Unsurprisingly there are plenty of options. How about a sea level walk from Santa Margherita to Portofino; a train ride to one of the Cinque Terre villages; relaxing on the beach; bike hire from the hotel and local bike ride; or a day out in Genova. Your tour leaders can advise.

  6. Day 6

Grade 4 walkers can enjoy a classic Cinque Terre walk on the Sentiero Azzurro path using the recently re-opened section of this cliff edge path from Monterosso to Corniglia. The sea views are never far away. 10km, 6hrs, 550m ascent and descent.
Grade 6 walkers take a train and taxi to Madonna di Soviore and walk to Manarola. A great walk with some quiet paths, a lovely ridge and a descent to Manarola. 14.5km, 7hrs, 500m ascent, 900m descent.

  7. Day 7

Grade 4 walkers will take in Portofino with a walk out from Santa Margherita, with time to explore Portofino and a ferry ride back. 7.5km, 4.5hrs, 350m ascent and descent.
Grade 6 walkers can also enjoy Portofino with a circular walk from Santa Margherita. 17km, 6hrs, 750m ascent and descent.

  8. Day 8

After breakfast we transfer back to Genoa to catch our flight home. Depending on flight times there may be time for a last stroll, some shopping or even a dip in the sea.

Please refer to your Holiday Information sheet (which can be found under View Departures & Book), for your departure date and for all your accommodation details.

Hotel Celeste

The three star Hotel Celeste has been run by the Repetto family for more than eighty years and has recently been refurbished, meaning the continuously high standards of hospitality and cuisine are complemented by modern facilities and new décor. The hotel is only a short walk into the centre of the beautiful Sestri Lavante and its location makes for a great base for our walks through the Cinque Terre. The jewel in this hotels crown may be its own private beach, which overlooks the Baia delle Favole (Bay of Fables), where sun loungers and canoes may be hired. The restaurant serves cuisine typical of the region, using the superior local produce, and is where we take breakfast and dinners. All rooms have hairdryer, air conditioning, safe and complimentary Wi-Fi. There is also a free internet terminal in reception.
