In the Middle Ages pilgrims walked in their thousands (and in great discomfort) from numerous points across Europe to congregate in Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain. We stay in rural hotels, and unlike the original pilgrims our baggage is sent on separately leaving us to carry a day sack.
