INTRODUCTION TO HUTTING IN THE STUBAI ALPS

A high alpine taster week in a hotel and huts

Have you ever gazed at the mountains and wondered what it would be like not only to walk amongst them but also spend the night high in a mountain hut? But does a week or two in mountain huts appear too long? Here’s the answer in the form of a taster tour, dividing your holiday week between mountain huts and a very comfortable valley hotel.

The Stubai Alps are the perfect location for an introductory hutting tour as they have a feeling of wildness and remoteness to them. They are generally unencumbered by ski development, and provide a thrilling high-mountain experience.

We start our week with two quality walks from our hotel at the northern end of the Stubai Valley. Amongst these the Gloatsteig walk follows a mountain stream to a panoramic trail around the Marchreisen Spitz, then visits an alm where eagles can be seen. We may also reach the Rotspitzl col, visiting two of the Stubai Valley’s oldest huts in this less frequented part of the valley.

We spend two full days acclimatising to high alpine treks from the comfort of our four-star valley floor hotel in Fulpmes. Having “walked yourself in” you leave the valley on day four and climb to the rarified world of mountain huts for the next three nights, rarely descending below 2000m, until you return to Fulpmes at the end. Once we leave for the huts at the southern end of the valley our route is along well-trodden paths, challenging, rough and steep at times with occasional fixed ropes and ladders.

The huts throughout are welcoming and well provisioned. We have, wherever possible, booked two to six bedded rooms in the huts, rather than the open plan ‘Matrazenlager’ accommodation. Please see our website or ask for the Holiday Information Sheet for this holiday for more details.

WALKING GRADES

Stamina is the key to these challenging holidays, which will typically be in the Alps or Pyrenees. There is plenty of ascent and descent over rough and steep ground, so a steady foot and a good head for heights is advisable. 800 - 1000m of ascent and descent in a day will be the norm throughout and you will be walking for up to 7 hours.

    12 Jul 2017 - 19 Jul 2017

    Day 1 - Aktivhotel Donnerhof, Fulpmes, 937m
We fly from London Heathrow to Innsbruck. On arrival we transfer by public transport south to Fulpmes in the Stubai Valley. The journey takes about an hour and a half, changing in Innsbruck.

    Day 2 - Aktivhotel Donnerhof, Fulpmes, 937m
The Stubai valley is a paradise for anyone who loves the mountains. Whilst we are based in Fulpmes there are many walks to choose from. It is likely that our two walks before we set off for the huts will include the Gloatsteig traverse around the Marchreisen peak and an ascent of the Rotspitzl (2379m). Both of these walk will take around 6 hours and involve in excess of 1000m of ascent and ascent. Other walks my be substituted, depending on weather conditions.

    Day 4 - Dresdner Hut, 2308m
Today we start off our four day adventure into the rarefied world of the high alps. On each day our morning's walk will bring us to the hut which will then allow us to do more mountain walking in the afternoon having left our main pack at the hotel. We take a public bus to the far end of the Stubai Valley. From our starting point at 1700m at the Mutterberger Alm we climb to the Mutterberger Lake at 2500m, then continue to the Dresdner Hut.
    7km (4.5 miles), 1000m ascent / 430m descent, 3 1/2 to 4 hours

    Day 5 - Sulzenau Hut, 2191m
There are several paths leading between the Dresdner and Sulzenau huts. Our preferred route takes us along the ridge between the Großer and Kleiner Trögler peaks (maximum altitude 2902m).
    4.5 km (3 miles), 650m ascent / 750m descent, 3 hours
This should then allow us time to climb south from the hut in the afternoon towards the glaciers which spread from the Italian border ridge at the southern end of the valley.

    Day 6 - Nürnberger Hut, 2290m
Our relatively short morning's walk to the Nürnberger Hut takes us via the picturesque Grünau Lake. From here we climb to the pass south of the Urfallspitze at 2750m before descending to the hut.
5km (3 miles). 600m ascent / 525m descent, 2 1/2 hours In the afternoon we climb and then descend to the picturesque Freiger Lake, just a stone's throw from the glaciers descending from the border ridge.
    4km (2 1/2 miles), 250m ascent and descent, 2 hours

    Day 7 - Aktivhotel Donnerhof, Fulpmes, 937m
Before descending to the valley we will climb the Mairspitze (2781m). The last section of the walk is a rough scramble involving exposure so a head for heights is essential.
4.2km (2.6 miles), 660m ascent & descent, 3 hours On returning to the hut we have a straightforward walk back down to the valley, following the Langentalbach river. 6.6km (4.1 miles)

    Day 8 -
We have a free morning in Fulpmes (any changes to flight times permitting) before taking the tram or bus back to Innsbruck, then on to the airport for our return flight to Heathrow.

  • Accommodation
    Aktivhotel Donnerhof

We stay in the very comfortable, four-star family run Aktivhotel Donnerhof in the centre of Fulpmes. Elisabeth Villgrater and her team have made us very welcome here for many years. We start the day with a large buffet breakfast, and the four course dinners are always something to look forward to. The hotel has a spa with a swimming pool partly inside and partly outside the hotel, a games room and is very close to a variety of small shops. The hotel also has its own farm.

    Complementary Wi-Fi is available throughout.

    Stubai Mountain Huts

For the middle of the holiday we stay in mountain huts, at higher altitudes, often set in truly breathtaking locations. The above pictures give an indication of the settings, including the Dresdner Hut and Sulzenau Hut.

Bedrooms are usually 2 to 6 bedded rooms but occasionally 8 to 10 bedded rooms. Facilities are often quite simple in line with the remoteness and difficulty of access but they are improving year on year. Accommodation in huts will not provide en suite facilities and most huts will make a small charge for use of the showers. On days 4,5,& 6 all meals will be provided. These will include a continental breakfast, and a cooked dinner each day. Lunch will normally be a picnic bought by the leader from the huts.Whilst we endeavour to cater for people with special dietary needs, this can be very difficult at times. The qulaity of the food is excellent, but given the location it can be impossible to accomodate any special dietary requirements.

During our three nights staying in the mountain huts you will be required to carry your own belongings. You may leave your main bag and any items that you will not require at our hotel in Fulpmes as you will be returning on day 7 for an overnight before our return on day 8.

    Alpine Club Membership

We have worked with Europe's alpine huts and supported their work since our earliest days and, as a condition of booking, require that all group members must belong to a recognised Alpine association. Traditionally we have recommended the Austrian Alpine Club which has reciprocal agreements with the Club Alpin Français, the Club Alpin Suisse, the Deutscher Alpenverein and the Club Alpino Italiano, but membership of any of these associations (or an association with full reciprocal rights) is acceptable. Please remember to bring your membership card on holiday or you will be liable to pay locally the difference between the members’ and non-members’ hut tariff. More details are available on our Holiday Information Sheet.
