Trappist Monasteries in San Telmo

Majorca walking holidays in San Telmo 21-28 April, 2012

Majorca – just a hop, skip and a jump away. A mere two-hour flight enabled us to reach Palma Airport and meet our leader, George Wright. Shortly after, we were warmly welcomed into the south-western side of San Telmo and were immediately thrilled at its walking possibilities.

As we entered the hotel, the quiet humming of the air-conditioning, the bountiful breakfast options and the Mediterranean cuisine available were enough to sell us on the Hostal Dragonera. However, we soon discovered there was even more to offer.

The hotel was brilliantly situated amongst local bars, restaurants, supermarkets, and even ice cream parlours – we were so glad that we could walk it all off.

On top of that, we were certainly lucky with our leader, George, who informed us that he was not only familiar with San Telmo, but that he also spoke Spanish…olé.

Slow and steady wins the race, thus George eased us into our holiday by taking us on a relatively easy walk to S’Arraco. On the second day, we experienced some rougher terrain on the route to La Trapa, a former Trappist monastery, which was abandoned in 1820.

The next day’s walk took us along part of the Archduke’s Trail where we were mesmerised by the breathtaking views of Dragonera Island. We finished our walk at Valldemossa where the minibus met us and took us back to San Telmo.

The longest walk of the week was 14km when we had the opportunity to walk to Ses Basses. Our senses were tremendously engaged and they peaked when we saw a little ferry sailing between San Telmo and Dragonera.

Unfortunately, we had to return to the UK that evening so we missed out on the last day’s walk to Puerto Andratx. However, we were thoroughly satisfied with the sights we were able to take and the walks we were a part of in the mountains of Majorca. – Hollie Morrell and Annette Leishman
