Pompeii, the Sleeping Giant

Thu, 07 Jan 2016

Sorrento Peninsula; 7th – 14th May

My 7th Ramblers Worldwide Holidays journey and it did not disappoint, from the friendliness of my fellow holidaymakers to the fount of all local knowledge – our leader Anna! She led us on some stunning walks high above the coastal cliffs. The panoramic views will definitely remain in my memory for a long time. I never tired of them. It became somewhat of a joke, but Anna was always keen to offer us ‘options’, in case anyone wished to do a different route at any point or see somewhere else.

A personal highlight has to be Pompeii. I found it a very atmospheric place once I had escaped the ‘madding crowds’! Vesuvius certainly dominates the skyline anywhere you turn in the city, and brings it home to you what a catastrophic event 79AD was.

Some of us even climbed to the crater rim on Friday the 13th! Luckily, not a rumble from the sleeping giant was heard.
