Guided Walking Holidays - Il Cilento, A Coastal Paradise

The great rocky mass of Monte Bulgheria rises above fields of ancient olive trees. To the west and north of the summit lie the seaside towns of Agropoli and Palinuro where you stay. They see very few foreign visitors – for some reason the Italians have managed to keep this area a secret. Experience this journey with Ramblers Walking Holidays.

The coast is wild in places, where millennia of waves have beaten holes in the rocks. Small sandy beaches and umbrella pines where turquoise waves lap against the shore are perfect for a swim or picnic. Inland, little used trails rise through aromatic low vegetation to hill villages and panoramic viewpoints. In the spring there are orchids and warm autumn days find lizards scurrying under rocks.

The impressive temples at Paestum are easily visited on our transfer day. From Palinuro we walk out to the cape south of the town. The tiny white sand beach at Cala Pozzala is another destination, where close to the shore the sea is turquoise and crystal clear.

Holiday Highlights

  • Waking up each morning with the smell of sea in the air.
  • Walking in a remote area where few tourists visit.
  • Paestum. One of the most impressive archeological sites anywhere.
  • Sea views from just about everywhere we walk.

Hotel La Conchiglia

The welcoming four star Hotel La Conchiglia is a short walk from the beach and has a terrace with magnificent panoramic views of the sea and the Capo Palinuro. It is still well located for access to the town shops and entertainment, as well as being an excellent base for our walking in the Cilento National Park. The recently refurbished hotel has rooms with en-suite facilities, free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, satellite TVs, hairdryers and tea and coffee making facilities. The restaurant where we take breakfasts and dinners, embraces Mediterranean cuisine and its health benefits, serving dishes to an excellent standard.

Hotel Mare

The Hotel Mare has been run by the Della Torre family for more than 40 years and retains a family friendly atmosphere. You couldn’t ask for a better place to stay to take on the beautiful Campanian coastline, with the hotel set right on the beach, where you can wander down to watch the sunsets. The three star hotel has an outdoor pool and Mediterranean garden with a bar and pizzeria. As well as being by the beach the hotel is well located near the old area of Agropoli. Excellent local cuisine is served in the restaurant, including the great seafood from this region, and this is where we take breakfasts and dinners. The spacious bedrooms are pleasantly appointed with hairdryer, air conditioning, TV and a telephone. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.
