The green hills and coast of Southern Italy
Guided Walking Holidays - Il Cilento, A Coastal Paradise
The great rocky mass of Monte Bulgheria rises above fields of ancient olive trees. From the summit at 1225m, reached partly along old mule tracks, the sunny world of southern Campania lies at your feet. To the west and north lie the seaside towns of Agropoli and Palinuro where you stay. They see very few foreign visitors – for some reason the Italians have managed to keep this area a secret.
We are based in the southern coastal part of the Cilento National Park. The coast is in places wild, where millennia of waves have beaten holes in the rocks and jagged cliffs rise above the sea. Elsewhere there are small sandy beaches and umbrella pines where turquoise waves lap against the shore, the perfect places for a swim or picnic. Inland little used trails rise through aromatic low vegetation to hill villages and panoramic viewpoints.
From our first base in Agropoli we walk up to the village of Casigliano, passing an old wooden olive press on the way. From the top of Monte Tresino there are not only great views, but also swallowtail butterflies. Elsewhere in the spring there are orchids and warm autumn days find lizards scurrying under rocks.
On transferring between centres we stop at the impressive temples at Paestum with time to explore. An hour and a half south lies our second base, Palinuro. Here we walk out to the cape south of the town. The tiny white sand beach at Cala Pozzala is another destination, where close to the shore the sea is turquoise and crystal clear.
Subject to flight times we will stop for lunch and sightseeing at Salerno on the way back to the airport.
