THE HIGHLIGHTS OF SLOVENIA

Breathtaking walking in the Julian Alps...

Traverse the peaks, deep valleys and gorges in the shadow of Triglav and stop to take in the crystal clear waterfalls and lakes. At higher levels you’ll cross open meadows and lush green valleys and climb above the tree line for walks along rocky ridges.

Slovenia is situated in the heart of Europe, bordered by Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. Slovenia enviably remains unchanged and unaffected by the huge crowds of tourists that descend on the French and Austrian Alps. It offers walkers and nature enthusiasts a wonderful outdoor experience. At their Eastern end the mighty mountains of the Alps spill over into northern Slovenia. Here are the Julian Alps, first class hiking country.

Our two centres, Bohinj and Kranjska Gora, are located in the north west, not very far from mountain passes that lead into Italy and Austria. Bohinj is a delightful mountain village in an enviable location; next to the picturesque Lake Bohinj and overlooked by Triglav, the highest mountain in Slovenia. We’ll walk the landscapes around Triglav amongst beautiful peaks, deep valleys and gorges, waterfalls and lakes.

Our second centre is Kranjska Gora, beautifully situated in the Sava Dolinka Valley. A popular ski resort in winter, this mountain village is ideally placed for some exhilarating walking with some fantastic higher level walking routes in the summer months. There are alpine forests, open meadows and lush green valleys, and some great rocky routes above the treeline – some easy scrambling and a head for heights may be required. We can take the occasional lunch at a hut and sit back to enjoy the views.

WALKING GRADES

Full day walks with appreciable amounts of ascent and descent. These walks are in more remote areas such as the Alps or northern Portugal. Similar to Grade 5, but with most of the walks at the upper level of ascent/descent, time and distance.

Kranska Gora is a premier ski resort and in the summer a picturesque Alpine town.

Rooms take advantage of the scenery, with views out to the mountains. They are also well equipped with en-suite facilities, mini bar, desk, safe hair dryer and free Wi-Fi.

An appetizing buffet dinner and continental breakfast is served at Restaurant Prisank, where you can enjoy your meals with stunning views of the mountains.

    Hotel Jezero, Bohinj

We stay in the four-star Hotel Jezero, next to the beautiful Lake Bohinj. Resting at the base of a deep valley, the clear waters of Bohinj are surrounded by the green and rocky slopes of the rugged Julian Alps. Being less crowded than its more famous cousin, Lake Bled, Bohinj offers a more tranquil mountain experience.

Clean and spacious rooms in the hotel come with the modern amenities you would expect from a four star hotel, with telephone, cable TV, mini bar, safe, hairdryer, balcony with outdoor seating and en-suite bathroom. Free Wi-Fi is available.

Two restaurants at the hotel offer tasty and traditional Slovenian cuisine. Both the Vrtovin restaurant and the à-la-carte Zlatovcica restaurant have covered terraces offering a views of the impressive scenery.
