At 53 miles, this long distance circular footpath was devised in the 1980s and has quickly become a favourite amongst continuous trail walkers. It is traditionally walked from Pateley Bridge, the home of England’s oldest sweet shop, in four stages. However our holiday is for six nights, with five walking days to allow more time to take in many of the interesting features along the route. Although the Nidderdale Way is a low level route, it does ascend above the valley floor at times.
This walk is a beautiful journey through subtly contrasting landscapes. The Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty was created in 1994 to conserve the rich heritage and character of the dale and its surrounding countryside.
Some of Yorkshire’s famous sights you’ll see along the way include Ripley Castle, with its deer park and gardens laid out by Capability Brown, including a beautiful 19th century estate village rebuilt to resemble a French village castle. There’s also How Stean Gorge, a spectacular limestone ravine as well as the Guisecliff buttresses and the fascinating natural gritstone sculptures at Brimham Rocks.
There are charming old villages too which we pass along the way as well as the River Nidd and Gouthwaite Reservoir, with its array of birdlife.
Our route starts and finishes at Brimham Rocks and transport will take us to the start of the trail each day and return us back to Harrogate at the end of the walks.

Itinerary & Travel
Whilst every effort will be made to adhere to the outlined itinerary and advertised programme, local conditions can change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. This may mean that routes and timings need to be amended or the order of days may change, sometimes at short notice.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we may unfortunately need to withdraw a tour that is currently confirmed to operate and we therefore reserve the right to cancel your booking. We would always do our utmost to give you plenty of notice should we have to do this. Selected elements of this tour, including local attractions and restaurants, may change at late notice. Please ensure you have valid insurance cover before you travel.
Independent arrival at The Crown Hotel Harrogate. Check in is from 3pm. Dinner each evening is in the hotel restaurant.
The tour starts at Brimham Rocks - the amazing collection of natural rock formations. There will be time to explore these dramatic moorland rock formations before the start of the walk. We will walk downhill to Pateley Bridge then we will follow the River Nidd leading up the valley. The route passes Gouthwaite Reservoir before finishing at Low Sikes.
We walk passed Scar House Reservoir, the largest dam in Britain when it was finished in 1936. It takes in one of the most photographed churches in Britain in Middlesmoor to Nidderdale's natural wonder, How Stean Gorge, before we finish up in Studfold.
This is probably the most challenging section of the holiday. There is a steep section coming out of Wath across fields on the diverted Nidderdale Way. The route takes us along the side of the valley to Ramsgill, climb up to see the old lead mine and descend to Bewerley before climbing to Nought Moor.
We start up on the moor, passed Yorke's Folly, which can be rough underfoot, then downhill to the river. This walk includes the gritstone crag which rivals Brimham Rocks for views. We continue along the river then uphill through the woods, back along the river and around Birstwith and into Hampsthwaite finishing by the church.
We cross over fields, tracks and bridleways for a moderate walk featuring the ancestral seat of the Ingilby family for 28 generations at Ripley Castle, continue along Clayton Gill, walk through farmland and finish at the rock formation at Brimham Rocks.

We stay at the three star Crown Hotel situated in the heart of the charming old town of Harrogate. Just a few minutes walk from the Turkish Baths, Royal Pump Rooms, Betty's Tea Rooms and Valley Gardens. The hotel has created a contemporary environment which complements its historic architecture. The hotel has 114 individually styled bedrooms, each with its own unique charm. A range of modern amenities are available as well as 24 hour room service, complimentary Wi-Fi, tea and coffee making facilities.
Breakfasts and dinners are taken at the hotel. With a menu sourced from local suppliers, breakfast is served in the historic Churchill Suites featuring oak-panelled walls, stained glass windows and ornate ceiling decorations. The hotel's stylish restaurant, known as The Place, is where our evening meals are taken.
This is a Grade 5 moderate holiday which includes full day walks with moderate amounts of ascent and descent. The paths are mostly good, but there may be some steep and rough ground. Local Transport Costs
All local transport costs in conjunction with the advertised activity programme are included in the holiday cost. There may be occasions where additional visits or excursions are added to enrich your experience, these will be paid for locally by you if you choose to participate. Local transport can be a mix of private hire coaches, taxis, local buses and ferries depending on the itinerary.
A range of local excursions and activities may be available to book at your destination through a local operator. We have no involvement in such activities or excursions which are not run, supervised or controlled in any way by us. Your contract will be with the local activity supplier and we accept no responsibility for their actions or omissions.
When budgeting for your holiday, you will need to consider drinks, any meals not included in the holiday price, non-included entrance fees, optional excursions you may choose to participate in locally and any souvenirs or additional services such as laundry. A general guideline for lunches and drinks is £10-£20 per person per day.
Although entirely at your own discretion, tipping is an important aspect of tourism and hospitality life and expectations are fairly high. In order to simplify tipping, we strongly recommend that you allow your leader to take care of making sure tips are given to hotel and restaurant staff and to local guides and drivers. This will be done using some funds provided by us together with, if you wish, a contribution from you, which he/she will collect during the holiday.
Your tour leader makes the world of difference to your holiday and ours are as passionate about discovering the world on foot as you are. They're resourceful, organised and widely travelled. They will handle all the local administration and other needs that might arise to ensure that you don't have to worry about planning your days and you can enjoy your holiday. Although leading group holidays, they won't forget that every group is made up of individuals. Each tour leader has their own individual style, talents and professional backgrounds and all are trained, qualified, experienced and dedicated to making your holiday as enjoyable, interesting and inspiring as possible.

Each evening, your tour leader will discuss with you the programme for the following day. This will be your opportunity to discuss the details and ensure the planned activities suit your walking ability. If you have concerns on clothing or equipment, this can be discussed then also. If you do not wish to join the organised group programme, please let the leader know.

by car: From the A1 North – Exit the A1(M) junction 47 to Harrogate. Follow the A661 for Harrogate town centre into West Park one way system. After the second pedestrian crossing turn left down Montpelier Hill. The Crown Hotel is at the bottom.

by rail: The nearest railway station is Harrogate which is a 10 minute walk to the hotel. There are trains from London Kings Cross amongst other places.
by coach: The nearest bus station is at Harrogate. The coach station is in the town centre just off Station Parade, which is less than 100 metres from the railway station.

Lightweight waterproof walking boots with a good moulded sole (such as Vibram or similar) and a deep tread and which provide ankle support are strongly recommended and may be essential for some walks.
