From the sweeping emerald slopes of the Cheviot Hills to the broad stretches of sandy shores along the Northumberland Coast Path, this region is a tapestry of awe-inspiring landscapes, each one more captivating than the last. Over five days, you'll trace rugged craggy trails, cross golden sand dunes, and traverse the dramatic expanse of the Northumberland National Park.

You'll also meander along the best segments of St Cuthbert’s Way. This cross-border route unites two landmarks intimately connected with the iconic religious figure: Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne.

Today you'll walk on the Northumberland Coastal Path from Craster, via Dunstanborough Castle to Boulmer. You will also explore the charming Alnwick Castle and The Alnwick Garden (entrance fees included).

After a short detour to the magnificent ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle standing on a remote headland in a naturally defensive position, you will head north along the Northumberland Coastal Path from Craster to Boulmer. Craster, a small fishing village famous for its kippers, still smoked in the village smokery today. 

The Northumberland coastal path affords superb coastal views, walking on beaches, minor roads, tracks and permissive paths, generally level with very few steep climbs. Today's walk is completed in the tiny fishing village of Boulmer, which was once the hang out of pirates and smugglers crossing the border to and from Scotland with their ill gotten gains.

Holburn to Fenwick (along St Cuthberts Way) & Holy Island

Walking on St Cuthbert's Way past St Cuthbert's Cave and through Kylow Woods to Fenwick. This walk crosses undulating country to a sandstone ridge and St Cuthbert's Cave, an overhanging outcrop of sandstone where monks carrying St Cuthbert's body from Lindisfarne took refuge according to legend. There are wonderful views of the Cheviots, Glendale, Lindisfarne, Bamburgh Castle and the Farne Islands.

There will also be the chance to visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, home of the great Benedictine abbey where St Cuthbert was once the Bishop.

Wooler to Hethpool & Bamburgh Castle

Crossing the Cheviot Hills you will walk from Wooler Common to the estate village of Hethpool in the College Valley. Following St Cuthbert’s way the path ascends gently and then descends into the beautiful College valley, a wonderful walk, great views in tranquil hill country.

We also include a visit to Bamburgh Castle today (entrance fee included); the Kingdom of Northumbria’s epicentre and home of the Armstrong family since 1894. Crowning nine acres of the Great Whin Sill, Bamburgh Castle has stood guard above the Northumberland coast for thousands of years. The Tankerville Arms Hotel

We stay in a former 18th century coaching inn, the privately owned Tankerville Arms Hotel, ten minutes’ walk from the centre of Wooler; a market town dating back to the 13th century.

This traditional three-star walker friendly hotel offers comfortable facilities, hearty pub-style food and a warm welcome from its friendly managers and staff. Whilst the hotel is more traditional with individually styled bedrooms, it can be described as 'quirky' but it is full of character, unlike a lot of modern chain hotels. We like to be able to offer our clients a privately owned hotel, full of character in a location where accommodation for groups is difficult to come by. It is down to personal taste, but you may think the decor in the building is 'old fashioned' but it is clean, and you will receive a good personable service from its friendly staff. 

All bedrooms include en-suite bathrooms (with shower and/or bath), a TV and tea and coffee making facilities. Whilst the hotel's website describes all bedrooms as having free Wi-Fi, we say that connection depending on the location of the room can be very patchy and you may only get Wi-Fi in communal parts of the building. 

If you are driving to Wooler, then the hotel has a large free of charge car park. 


The White Swan

The White Swan is located at the heart of the small, historic market town of Alnwick, a short distance from Alnwick Castle and Gardens, offering 56 bedrooms, a bar/bistro and restaurant. The property is a charming 300 year old coaching inn which has recently undergone a tasteful refurbishment. 

Classic ensuite hotel room facilities include:

The bedrooms we offer on this holiday are the 'Classic' standard, however the hotel also offers Superior rooms, Suites and Four Poster Suites. If you would like a room upgrade, please let us know and we can enquire with the hotel. All single rooms are double rooms for sole occupancy which offer plenty of space. 

Dinner each evening will be taken in the hotel's Olympic Restaurant where the head chef and his team have put together seasonally-changing menus using fresh, local produce and offering a wide range of dishes. The interior of the restaurant is a wonderful sight - you are surrounded by the original panelling, mirrors, the ceiling and fireplace salvaged from RMS Olympic (the sister ship of RMS Titanic).  

There are 27 free car parking spaces located at the rear of the hotel available on a first come first served basis. If the car park is full, there are two large public car parks to the rear of the hotel which are free of charge 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

For those with an interest in parks and gardens this range of holidays will lead you to those destinations which either are synonymous with flora, famous for their national parks or boast stunning private and public gardens. Spring and early summer are ideal times to enjoy blooming landscapes. A flower holiday with us follows an unhurried pace allowing plenty of time for your photographs. 

On this holiday we include an afternoon visit to The Alnwick Garden - a multi-award winning visitor attraction, home to the world's largest Tai Haku Cherry Orchard and a grand cascade comprising 120 water jets. There is also the Formal Garden to explore at the National Trust property of Cragside, which covers three acres of impressive gardens over three levels.

If there are additional visits or excursions to enrich your experience, you can choose to participate and cover the costs locally. Depending on the itinerary, local transport may involve a mix of private hire coaches, taxis, local buses, and ferries.

At your destination, you may have the option to book various local excursions and activities through a local operator. It's important to note that we are not involved in these activities or excursions, and we do not operate, supervise, or control them in any way. Lightweight waterproof walking boots with a good moulded sole (such as Vibram or similar) and a deep tread and which provide ankle support are strongly recommended and may be essential for some walks.

Staying Healthy On Holiday

Health requirements in destination can change, and it's crucial for you to take responsibility in staying informed. Ensure that you consult a professionally qualified source and comply with any health requirements at least 6 to 8 weeks before your departure. Your GP can provide advice on vaccinations. Stay proactive about your health preparations to ensure a safe and enjoyable travel experience.

Travel Insurance

It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.

The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses (including the consequences of a Covid positive test result), mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.

Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.

In the event that you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.

If travelling outside the UK you must carry proof of insurance with you and produce it if reasonably requested to do so by RWH Travel staff, tour leaders or suppliers. No refunds will be made should you be excluded from the walking programme through being uninsured or you being unable to demonstrate that you are insured.
