One of the most memorable things about a cruise to the fjords is, believe it or not, cruising the fjords! The journey between ports is always picturesque with nearly one third of the country located above the tree line, surrounded by towering peaks and magnificent glaciers, found as far south as central southern Norway. 

In some ports of call you'll follow captivating walking trails and in some you will spend time with local guides, furthering your knowledge of history and culture during our exploration ashore. There will be free time in each port for you to explore at leisure.

Alesund is a colourful city surrounded by deep blue water and craggy snow-capped mountains over 2000m high, and you will explore it by foot! 

Travel along the spectacular "Trollstigen" road in Åndalsnes with its 11 hairpin bends. 

Days at sea are spent sailing through captivating fjords and past remote colourful towns, perfectly complemented with active days exploring ashore. Without a doubt, a cruise is the finest way to experience the other-worldly setting of Norway’s coast and fjords. 

Norway has a reputation for being expensive, but on a cruising holiday you benefit from excellent value and experience more places than you would on a land based holiday. Liverpool - welcome aboard!

Board your ship at the port and set sail in the early evening. Check in for your cruise begins one hour prior to embarkation and embarkation at the cruise terminal usually begins three hours before departure and closes one hour prior to sailing. At the port you will be greeted by Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ staff, including porters who will arrange for your luggage to be delivered to your cabin. There will be a letter from your leader in your cabin informing you of the place and time for you to meet the rest of the group that evening.

Having cruised most of the way along the dramatic Naeroyfjord and Gudvangen, reach the small alpine village of Olden, encircled by towering mountains and deep fjords. 

Take transport up the Olden valley to start a scenic walk towards the snout of either the Brennsdal or Briksdal Glaciers, small arms of the mighty Jostedals Glacier, the largest glacier in mainland Europe. The walk is quite steep but can be taken slowly – the panoramic mountain views at the top are magnificent! 

Day 5

Helleyslt

Before you continue your cruise of the fjords, make a quick stop in the remote and small fjordland village of Hellesylt, home to only a few hundred people.  Due to the typography of the terrain being too steep for the grade and the shorter duration in port, there will be no walk offered by your leader. However, you may wish to pop ashore to stretch your legs with a short stroll around the town.  Perhaps walk to the Hellesyltfossen waterfall which divides the village into two parts. Although Hellesyltfossen is only 20m high, a very different waterfall to the tall falls found along the fjords, water thunders down the granite rocks, making for an impressive scene. During the spring, snow from the surrounding mountains melts, creating a dramatic rush of water down the falls. Maybe visit the scenic 19th century Sunnyvlen church or visit the Peer Gynt Gallery where you’ll find intricate wood carvings made by a local artist. 

Back on board,  cruise the spectacular serpentine curves of the famous Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO world heritage site and incredibly beautiful journey. Sail towards Geiranger so we can view the Seven Sisters Waterfall cascading 250m down the mountainside into the fjord below. The ships sails back towards the coast through Hjorundfjord, a very impressive day full of beautiful natural wonders.

Alesund is a colourful city surrounded by deep blue water and craggy snow-capped mountains over 2000m high. It’s a charming town with art nouveau style architecture and pastel coloured buildings perched upon the waterside; rebuilt after a devastating fire in 1904 where most of the city was destroyed. 

Today explore Alesund by foot! Discover its unique fisherman statues and venture through its old harbour area. Pass art galleries and the informative fishery and town museums. There may even be time to visit its many local shops and cafes. Alesund is a base for Norway’s largest cod fishing fleet so you may even wish to try some of the superb sea food! If there is time, perhaps capture the incredible panoramic scenery from the top of Alesund at the Fjellstua viewpoint and café!

Day 7

Andalsnes

Sail one of the longest Nowegian fjords, the Romsdalefjorden, framed by towering mountains and thundering waterfalls. Pass the dramatic peak of Romsdalshorn and the sheer cliff face of Trollveggen, as well as little villages like tranquil Isfjorden.

As it is earlier in the season, there are three walking options, and your leader will choose the most appropriate walk depending on the weather and snow conditions.

These mountain walks are demanding and are at the top of grade 4 with some parts more within the range of grade 5.

The day starts with a drive from Åndalsnes to the spectacular "Trollstigen" road with its 11 hairpin bends. Your journey takes us to the viewpoint on the Trollstigen Plateau suspended above the valley, framed by glass railings with a panoramic view of the surrounding dramatic mountains. Take a leisurely hike to the unique emerald green and turquoise blue Bispevannet. This distinctive glacial colour makes for a perfect picture. Surrounded by the wild Romsdalsfjella and the view towards the Romsdalsfjord, this trail has continuous spectacular scenery.

Drive from Åndalsnes, winding through the majestic mountains that offer impressive views of the Romsdalsfjord. Your journey will take you past the charming villages of Eidsbygda and Rodven, nestled against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the Romsdal Alps. Notice the pretty church in Rodven, dating back to the 13th century.

Upon reaching Landresetra, your journey continues on foot through forest, slowly ascending up towards the ridges of the fjords. The trail becomes steeper as you approach Tjuvjolet. Marvel at the scenes that unfold before you along the scenic fjord.

Drive along the fjords and mountains from Åndalsnes, past the villages of Eidsbygda and Rodven, all the way up to the Ramnhaugskaret pass at 220m asl, the surrounding views are nothing short of spectacular. Follow a path on foot along a ridge towards the peak of Randestfjellet. Here, panoramic views unfurl before your eyes, offering a captivating spectacle of the fjords stretching out towards Molde and Romsdalen. Immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the Norwegian scenery as you stand above the fjords.

Olsen Jr.’s great-great-grandmother, as many other Olsen vessels have over the years, she exudes classic, elegant style in her exterior and interior design, features spacious and comfortable public areas, and has all the facilities and special touches you need for a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

While she’s one of the largest ships, by overall size, in our fleet, Bolette has capacity for less than 1,400 guests. So, in keeping with our smaller-ship ethos, you’ll find that you’re not overcrowded on board, and have plenty of space in which to indulge yourself in the stylish dining venues, enjoy a glass of your favourite tipple and fantastic entertainment at the several bars, lounges and theatres, and while away the hours by the all-season pool. On Board

As a family-owned business, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines really pay attention to the smallest detail ensuring a wonderful voyage every time.

Passengers are referred to as guests, the ships call at smaller ports so they can often get closer and avoid overcrowding both onboard and ashore. At capacity, their ships will only ever sail with between 900 and 1,400 guests, depending on the vessel.

The ships becomes your floating hotels, with breakfasts, lunches and dinners catered for. Each ship is different with their own decorative flair, but with the same Fred Olsen level of service throughout.

Onboard you will not find the climbing walls, waterslides and games arcades found on some of the bigger vessels. Instead Fred Olsen focuses on more traditional entertainment in the form of evening shows, deck quoits, quiet bars, delightful restaurants, a library and in some cases, a cards room. You will also find a gym/fitness centre, swimming pool(s), and hairdresser. The ships offer plenty of space to just sit, relax, read a book and watch the coastlines and open waters drift by.

Walks & Excursions

The described walks assume that the weather will be good and that the ship will keep to the planned schedule. We may have to change the walks if the ship’s schedule changes or there is poor weather.

Sometimes the ship may need to anchor at a port of call. This means a tender needs to be used to reach port. Your Captain will advise when a tender service will be required.

Fred Olsen asks that you take your passport with you when you leave the ship to explore on shore.

Local Transport Costs

In the holiday cost, we've included all local transport expenses related to the advertised activity programme for your convenience. If there are additional visits or excursions to enrich your experience, you can choose to participate and cover the costs locally. Depending on the itinerary, local transport may involve a mix of private hire coaches, taxis, local buses, and ferries.

Optional Excursions

At your destination, you may have the option to book various local excursions and activities through a local operator. It's important to note that we are not involved in these activities or excursions, and we do not operate, supervise, or control them in any way. Your contract will be directly with the local activity supplier, and we bear no responsibility for their actions or omissions.

Spending Money

Fred Olsen Paying On Board

The currency on board ship is sterling. A credit account system is operated onboard allowing bar drinks, wine in restaurants, laundry charges, purchases from the shop and any other incidental expenses to be automatically charged to your account. You will be required to register a debit or credit card at check-in against which to charge your onboard account. At the time of writing there is no charge for payment by credit or debit card. Onboard accounts can be settled in cash, however, a debit or credit card must still be registered at check-in to secure the on-board account balance.

The following credit cards are accepted: Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa. Fred. Olsen also accepts Visa debit cards but is unable to accept American Express, Solo, and Electron, travel agent debit cards or traveller’s cheque cards.

The ship operates a Bureau de Change onboard, where currency can be purchased or sold subject to local currency restrictions. All major currencies are stocked based on the cruise destinations with no commission charge and competitive rates.

Currency in Norway

The currency used in Norway is the Norwegian Krone (NOK). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted. Norway is a virtually cash free country, so we recommend bringing very little cash with you. ATMs are widely available in most of Norway’s cities, towns and villages.

Tipping

Your cruise holiday price includes all ship, driver and where applicable, local guide tips. You can, should you wish, tip more at your discretion for any service provider who has gone above and beyond to make your holiday special.

While leading group holidays, they always keep in mind that each group is composed of individuals. Each tour leader brings their unique style, talents, and professional background to the table. Rest assured, they are all trained, qualified, experienced, and dedicated to making your holiday as enjoyable, interesting, and inspiring as possible. Remember, your leader, while on holiday, is your first port of call for any issues, ensuring a smooth and worry-free experience for you.

Leader's Evening Briefing

Each evening, your tour leader will meet with you to review the programme for the next day. This is your chance to discuss details and ensure that the planned activities align with your walking ability. If you have any concerns about clothing or equipment, feel free to bring them up during this discussion. If, for any reason, you prefer not to participate in the organised group programme, please inform your leader. Your preferences are important, and your leader is there to make sure your experience aligns with your expectations.

Embarkation

On arrival at the port you will need to produce both your ticket and a valid passport, so please ensure you have both ready to hand. When checking in you will be issued with your ship’s pass and boarding card. Your ship’s pass acts as your security pass and onboard account card for the full duration of the cruise. Each time you embark or disembark the ship your card will be swiped to record whether you are on board or ashore. In addition, your hand luggage may be subject to either x-ray scanning or a manual search each time you re-join the ship.

Disembarkation

At least 24 hours before the end of your cruise the full disembarkation instructions will be placed inside your cabin. Please ensure you have settled all onboard accounts before leaving the ship.

Luggage Allowance & Travel Documents

Your luggage allowance is 200lbs or 90kg. For safety reasons, each piece of luggage should weigh less than 44lbs or 20kg.

Approximately 10 days prior to departure, we will send you your cruise tickets and luggage labels. 

Please be advised that there are a number of items that are prohibited to be taken on board. To avoid any items being confiscated at check-in, please familiarise yourself with our prohibited items policy at www.fredolsencruises.com and search for ‘prohibited items’.

Personal Details Check

To ensure the accurate administration of your holiday arrangements, kindly verify that the personal details we have for you are current and correct. Confirm that you've given us all the necessary information for securing your travel and accommodation. Passports and Visas

European Passport Advice

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must meet the Schengen area rules.

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

For some Schengen countries your passport may need to be less than 10 years old during your whole visit, and the 3 months at the end of your visit may need to be within 10 years of your passport’s issue date.

Check both the issue date and the expiry date in your passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old.

Non British Passport holders should consult the host country’s embassy for applicable passport and visa entry requirements.

All meals are inclusive, ensuring you begin your day with a satisfying breakfast buffet featuring an array of options—from fresh fruits and cereals to a hearty English breakfast, cheeses, pastries, and more. The morning spread also includes unlimited tea or coffee, setting the tone for a delightful day at sea.

Lunches, enjoyed on cruising days, offer flexibility. Whether you prefer the generous buffet in the restaurant, the casual offerings in the café, or an alfresco poolside experience, the choice is yours. On days of exploration, a thoughtfully provided packed lunch awaits.

Come evening, prepare for a sumptuous five-course á la carte menu in a stylish restaurant. The menu, crafted by award-winning chefs, boasts a variety of mouth-watering options, with accommodation for special diets like fat-free, vegetarian, and gluten-free meals. Served by courteous waiting staff, the dinner experience creates a wonderful atmosphere. Our reservation for dinner at 6.15 pm ensures you have ample time to enjoy the evening entertainment if desired. Wine options can be pre-ordered through the Maître'd, the interactive intranet in your cabin, or directly at the table.

And there's more—morning coffee, afternoon tea, and extensive late-night suppers await your indulgence! Our group will also enjoy an exclusive drinks party, alongside the Captain's welcome and farewell gatherings, and a traditional afternoon tea with waiter service on a sea day.

Throughout the day, complimentary tea and coffee stations are available, typically in the informal café. While additional beverages are available for purchase, the prices are reasonable. Please note that alcoholic drinks bought ashore cannot be brought on board for consumption during the cruise.

For those with specific dietary needs such as diabetic, gluten/wheat-free, dairy-free/soya, vegetarian, vegan, or low-fat preferences, please inform us at the time of booking or no later than 14 weeks before departure. Your culinary experience on board is designed to be as delightful as your journey at sea.

Footwear & Kit List

Footwear

Lightweight waterproof walking boots with a good moulded sole (such as Vibram or similar) and a deep tread and which provide ankle support are strongly recommended and may be essential for some walks.

Outdoor activities are always safer and more enjoyable if you are prepared.

If you have not travelled with us before the following list might be of use:

  • Day sack (this should be able to carry all you would need for the day's activity)

Cruising Attire

Daywear

Daytime wear is casual with comfortable shoes for walking around deck. A lightweight jacket or coat is recommended for the early evening when the sun sets. You may also like to take a towel and swimwear as the Fred Olsen ships have small swimming pools and Jacuzzis. Towels are provided at the poolside should you forget your own. During the day casual wear is allowed in the restaurant but not swimwear.

Evening attire

During your cruise, there will be formal and smart casual evenings. On formal evenings, gentlemen are encouraged to wear ‘black tie’, although a dark suit and tie will suffice, with ladies elegantly dressed in cocktail or evening dress. On smart casual evenings, men can wear open-necked shirts, chinos and dark coloured jeans, and women dress or trousers and a top.

Staying Healthy On Holiday

Health requirements in destination can change, and it's crucial for you to take responsibility in staying informed. Ensure that you consult a professionally qualified source and comply with any health requirements at least 6 to 8 weeks before your departure. Your GP can provide advice on vaccinations. Stay proactive about your health preparations to ensure a safe and enjoyable travel experience.

No compulsory immunisations are required for visits to Norway.

You should be up to date with the usual immunisations recommended in the UK.

You may wish to consider immunisations against Tetanus and Tick-borne Encephalitis. Tick-borne Encephalitis immunisation is not applicable in winter.

Travel Insurance

It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.

The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses (including the consequences of a Covid positive test result), mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.

Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.

In the event that you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.

If travelling outside the UK you must carry proof of insurance with you and produce it if reasonably requested to do so by RWH Travel staff, tour leaders or suppliers. No refunds will be made should you be excluded from the walking programme through being uninsured or you being unable to demonstrate that you are insured.

If you are travelling to an EU country or Switzerland please also ensure that you have either an existing valid EU EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) or a valid UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). EHIC & GHIC Cards

Starting January 1st, 2021, you, as a UK traveller, can continue using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) throughout its valid five-year period, granting you access to medical assistance during your holiday until its expiry date. Be aware, though, that this coverage will no longer extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. In case you don't have a valid EHIC, you can apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will replace the EHIC as it gets phased out.

It's essential to emphasize that the EHIC/GHIC, while valuable, should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive medical or travel insurance. For your peace of mind and comprehensive coverage, considering additional insurance is highly recommended.
