Holiday Highlights

  • Wake up each morning to the smell of sea in the air and discover secluded inland trails.
  • Walk in a remote area which few tourists visit.
  • Visit Paestum, one of the most impressive archaeological sites anywhere.
  • Enjoy sea views from just about everywhere we walk.

The southern coastal part of the Cilento National Park sees few foreign visitors. The coast is in places wild, where millennia of waves have beaten holes in the jagged cliffs. Inland little used trails rise through aromatic vegetation to hillside villages with panoramic viewpoints.

From our first base in Agropoli we explore a local headland and a secluded narrow gorge. Other days see us deep in a forgotten inland valley or on top of Monte Vesole and its limestone pavement. Elsewhere in the spring there are orchids and warm autumn days find lizards scurrying under rocks.

An hour and a half south lies our second base, Palinuro, where en route we stop at the impressive Greek temples at Paestum. In Palinuro we go from headland to peak and from valley to beaches, some of which were voted 'best beach in Italy' only a couple of years ago.
