Overview

Holiday Highlights

  • Decide between an interesting one or two week programme of walking and culture.
  • Immerse yourself in history at Pompeii or Herculaneum (Itinerary Dependant).
  • Sample a taster section of the ‘Path of the Gods’.
  • Gaze into Vesuvius as you walk the crater's rim while at Herculaneum.
  • Absorb spectacular panoramic views whilst walking the Monte Faito ridge (Itinerary Dependant).
  • Enjoy two dinners in local restaurants each week.
  • Explore the famous towns of Amalfi, Sorrento and Positano (Itinerary Dependant).
  • Enjoy a post walk swim from the very tip of the Sorrento Peninsula (Itinerary Dependant).

The calm waters of the Bay of Naples reflect the cliffs like mirrored glass. Citrus groves and vineyards flourish in the fertile land, nourished by the ash of brooding Mount Vesuvius. The sea and the volcano have determined the history and defined the nature, cuisine and excellent wine of the region.

For years, we've combined rambles on the Sorrento Peninsula and in the Lattari Mountains with visits to local world-class sites. At the foot of Mount Vesuvius are the sites of the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum which were destroyed by the eruption of AD 79. Both these sites vividly evoke the past.

Sorrento, a holiday resort since Roman times, is easily accessible by train from our base, Vico Equense. The Amalfi coast towns of Amalfi and Ravello and the elegant city of Salerno to the south of the peninsula also await exploration. Near to Salerno stand the magnificent Greek temples at Paestum with a world-class on-site archaeological museum.

It is also possible to spend a free day in the animated and colourful city of Naples which is richly endowed with beautiful churches, palaces and museums, or alternatively, a trip to the romantic island of Capri is also popular and very easy.

With so much to see and do, these holidays offer a busy week or fortnight. Alternate weeks follow a different itinerary please carefully check the itinerary for what is included on your chosen date – to see everything on offer you need at least two weeks. All transport costs (we use both public and private hire transport) for the outlined programme are included in the holiday price. Entrance fees are not included to add flexibility to your holiday. The two week programme will include all of the above; the order of itinerary will depend on the travel date.

Our Dec 2020 departure is a 10 night holiday, and a chance to see in Christmas and New Year in a spectacular setting.

  • Return flights Gatwick to Naples (British Airways or Easyjet)
  • Airport transfers.
  • Half board en suite accommodation.
  • Dinners taken in a local restaurant on two evenings each week.
  • All local transport costs
  • Entrance fee to Herculaneum or Pompeii (Itinerary Dependant)
  • Entrance fees (unless otherwise specified)
  • Personal expenses (such as your bar bill)

Accommodation

Accommodation information

Below is the accommodation featured on this holiday across all departure dates. Please refer to the Itinerary for more detail about each nights' accommodation for each departure date.

Hotel Mary

The Hotel Mary has been welcoming our clients for many years. First with Enzo, the father, and now with Mariano, his son. The simple, yet delightful, hotel has a warm welcome and offers spectacular views over the Bay of Naples and the surrounding hills.

Built into the hillside, it is traditional in style and has a small pool (seasonal) and terrace with sunbeds. Remember to pop to reception for your pool towel.

Visible from the restaurant terrace the Mary has its own sea club (Open April - October), with its own bar and direct access to swim in the sea. Although only a short 10 minute walk, with lots of steps, you can also take the hotels shuttle bus for just €2 each way.

The hotel rooms are simple in decor and style but offer comfortable facilities including A/C and heating, en-suite (shower only), mini fridge, safe, TV, wifi and hairdryer. All rooms are twin, doubles, or doubles for sole use, and have a sea view with a balcony/patio.

Trip Information

All the details you need

Holiday Grade

This Grade 4 moderate holiday includes full and half day walks at a moderate pace over hilly terrain however there are some days that are very heavy on sightseeing as well. Half day walking will probably include about 3 hours of walking, with full days having around 5 hours. Expect ascents and descents of up to about 600m over the course of a day.

The terrain all along the Sorrento Peninsula is steep and whilst many of our paths contour around the hills inevitably some walking will involve steepish ascents and descents.

Paths are generally good underfoot and the pace of our walks will be gentle. The highest point we may reach on a walk is 1226m. For example the summit cone of Vesuvius is at around 1200m. For both of these walks we use local transport for the majority of the ascent.

Walks & Excursions

Local Transport Costs

All local transport costs in conjunction with the advertised activity programme are included in the holiday cost. There may be occasions where additional visits or excursions are added to enrich your experience, these will be paid for locally by you if you choose to participate.

During your stay we will use a delightful mix of public and hired transportation. The Italian rail system is busy and an experience in itself but what's truly great about it is that from Vico Equense Station we can easily get to Naples and all the way down to Sorrento, bypassing its busy roads. Whether it is a local bus or train we take on some days it is delightful to see and sometimes chat to the locals.

Optional Excursions

A range of local excursions and activities may be available to book at your destination through a local operator. We have no involvement in such activities or excursions which are not run, supervised or controlled in any way by us. Your contract will be with the local activity supplier and we accept no responsibility for their actions or omissions.

Free Day Ideas

Vico Equense offers great transport links from Naples all the way down to Sorrento at the end of the peninsula for very little cost.

Do check your holiday itinerary carefully as some of the free day options suggested below might already be part of your program:

Ascend Monte Faito by cable car for fantastic views of the Naples - Take the train from Vico Equense to Castellamare €1.30 each way and take the cable car which is next to the train station for €8. At the top there is a nice alpine style bar, a network of paths and scenic views awaiting you.

Versuvius - Great when paired in with Herculaneum but is a full day. Take the ‘Circumvesuviana’ train to Ercolano (€2.20 p/p one way).  Take a ‘Vesuvio Express’ shuttle bus from outside Ercolano station (€10 p/p return) to the coach park on Vesuvius. You will have to walk downhill from the car park to the ticket office ‘bigliettaria' to buy your entrance ticket (€10 p/p) to gain access to the path for the walk to the summit crater.

Herculaneum - Use the same train network to get to Herculaneum (€12 p/p).

Pompeii - Take the train from Vico Equense in the direction of Naples leaving from platform 1. Buy two tickets one for the outward journey and one for the return. The journey to ‘Pompeii Scavi’ ‘Circumvesuviana’ station takes 20 mins.  Exit the train station and turn right to reach the ‘Porta Marina’ entrance to the site.

Isle of Capri - This is very popular on a free day as the island is famous the world over for its natural beauty allowing for lots of free exploration. During the summer there is a ferry service from Seiano ( the marina below the Hotel Mary). The hotel staff will assist with the booking of tickets and they have a shuttle service down to the local harbour. In 2019 the cost of the return ferry from to Capri €40.00 p/p. When you come back the ferry is around 17.10 and the loudspeaker may announce SEIANO rather than Vico Equense!

Entrance fees are correct at time of writing.

Spending Money

Holiday Budgeting

When budgeting for your holiday, you will need to consider drinks, any meals not included in the holiday price, non-included entrance fees, optional excursions you may choose to participate in locally and any souvenirs or additional services such as laundry. A general guideline for lunches and drinks is £10-£20 per person per day.

Entrance Fees

Dependant on the itinerary your holiday date includes the entrance fee for Herculaneum or Pompeii are included in your holiday price.

There are lots of other sites that maybe visited during our programs or during free days and the following prices (subject to change) will give you an idea of the entrance fees you might incur:

The currency in Italy is the Euro.

Money along the Sorrento Peninsula

Should you need more cash whilst on the Sorrento Peninsula there are ATMs and banks in Vico Equense town just a short 5 - 10 minute stroll away from the hotel. Most days you will find yourself in a big enough town to take more cash out should you need or lots of vendors now take card payments.

Tipping

Although entirely at your own discretion, tipping is an important aspect of tourism and hospitality life and expectations are fairly high. In order to simplify tipping, we strongly recommend that you allow your leader to take care of making sure tips are given to hotel and restaurant staff and to local guides and drivers. This will be done using some funds provided by us together with, if you wish, a contribution from you, which he/she will collect during the holiday.

Tour Leaders & Local Guides

Tour Leaders

Your tour leader makes the world of difference to your holiday and ours are as passionate about discovering the world on foot as you are. They're resourceful, organised and widely travelled. If you do not wish to join the organised group programme, please let the leader know.

Passports and Visas

General Passport Advice

It is a good idea to carry photocopies of the personal details pages of your passport. Should you lose your passport, this may assist with the issue of replacement documents and your return to your home country.

Passport and visa requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you inform yourself from a professionally qualified source on, and comply with, such requirements.

General travel and destination advice for UK nationals is available from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office at www.fco.gov.uk/travel and at www.gov.uk/travelaware.

Brexit Passport Advice

You should have at least 6 months validity left on your passport from your date of arrival.

If you renewed a 10 year passport before it expired, extra months may have been added to your passport’s expiry date. These extra months will not count, so you should ensure that your passport is not older than 9 years and 6 months from the date of issue at the time of travel.

You may wish to renew your passport sooner rather than later, in order to make sure you have it in time for your holiday or travel plans.

Please ensure to regularly check the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website for updates on passport requirements leading up to and after Brexit or contact us for more assistance.

UK Government Brexit Information for Passports can be found at www.gov.uk/guidance/passport-rules-for-travel-to-europe-after-Brexit.

The UK Government has published a website tool to check the validity of your passport under these rules  which can be found at www.passport.service.gov.uk/check-a-passport.

In the event the UK leaves the EU without a deal, UK citizens will be able to visit the EU for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa. The UK Government also has information for travellers available at gov.uk/EUexit

Non British Passport holders should consult the host country’s embassy for applicable passport and visa entry requirements.

Meals

A nice continental and hot selection breakfast is provided at the hotel where you can start your day off with an amazing view from the restaurant terrace.

We dine at the hotel on five nights, the food is so good that the locals like to pop in to eat, and the views over the Gulf really cap off the evening. Meals are a chef's selection consisting of three choices for groups on a nightly basis. A welcome glass of wine goes down well while soaking up your first sunset on night one.

Each week we also eat out at local restaurants on two nights giving, you the opportunity to enjoy local dishes in an authentic atmosphere.

Footwear & Kit List

Footwear

Lightweight waterproof walking boots with a good moulded sole (such as Vibram or similar) and a deep tread and which provide ankle support are strongly recommended and may be essential for some walks.

Footwear As Hand Luggage

We recommend that you either wear your walking boots or shoes or pack them and some waterproofs in your hand luggage as in the unlikely event that your hold luggage is delayed, you will still be able to participate in the holiday programme.

The Ramblers Holidays Charitable Trust

Unlike many tour operators we have our own trust through which RWH Travel’s profits are channelled back into a variety of outdoor, walking-related or environmental conservation projects in the UK. The focus of the Trust’s financial support is Britain’s leading walking charity, The Ramblers, and their role in promoting the benefits and importance of walking to the British public. In addition the Trust welcomes applications for small grants from local organisations in the UK who need support for walking-orientated activities. This includes the establishment of footpaths and bridleways, funding for rebuilding bridges and renovating huts, as well as bursary funding for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for children who could not otherwise afford to do it. Please visit the ‘About Us’ section of our website and click on the Charitable Trust link for more details.

Heart and Sole

We appreciate that we are in a fortunate position to be able to use our profits to help make a difference to people's lives. Heart & Sole is a venture managed by our office staff, whose aim is to reach the heart of the communities in the countries we visit. Through Heart & Sole, we hope to make more of a long term, direct impact to these communities, particularly in less developed countries where even a small amount goes a long way. See our website for more information and details of some of the projects we support.

Staying In Touch

Mobile Phones

Please do provide us with a mobile phone contact number. We will only use this to contact you with important information relating to your holiday arrangements.

Do keep your mobile phones switched on and readily available when travelling to the airport or if delayed in transit so that we can contact you with any last minute information relating to your travel arrangements.

As a matter of courtesy, please switch off your mobile phone during walks, or endeavour to minimise its use. Please also try to minimise the use of mobile devices during group meals.
