Walking grade

Grade 4

This is a grade 4 winter walking holiday where you can expect full and half days of walking at a moderate pace. Our walks will be between 6-8 miles a day. Our full days of walking can be up to 5 hours of walking whereas our half days can be up to 3 hours. Füssen lies at an altitude of 800m and the highest point we reach is just over 1000m on a walk to the east of Neuschwanstein Castle. Depending on the weather, we may reach two mountain huts at a height of 1200m.  The ascents and descents can be up to about 600m. Some walks will entail a gentle uphill climb or level walks around a lake to points of interest, such as the royal residences. We can enjoy wonderful views of the mountains which rise to 2,300m. Walking poles can be helpful on icy surfaces and these can be usually rented from the hotel. Winter waking is often on cleared and prepared paths so all you need is a good pair of walking boots, warm socks, your usual winter gear, and a pair of walking poles – and away you go!

Discover Collection

Meticulously curated, guided walking holiday itineraries that delve into the culture, wildlife, cuisine, and rich history of the world.

Overview

Holiday Highlights

  • Take lakeland and woodland walks with splendid views.
  • Explore the stunning fairytale residences of King Ludwig II.
  • Enjoy excursions to Oberammergau and Linderhof Royal Lodge - a pocket-sized palace.
  • Relax in a comfortable spa hotel, a short walk from the town centre.
  • Neuschwanstein castle. A visit is included in the holiday price

Bavaria enjoys perhaps Germany's finest scenery; rich in history, old-world traditions, with a unique identity and striking beauty. A land of fairy tales, Bavaria is a wonderful place to visit at any time of the year however, we think that winter is extra special. Feel invigorated by the pure mountain air; enjoy long periods of fine weather with clear visibility allowing for spectacular views of snow-capped mountain peaks, fairy-tale castles and stunning winter scenery. The surrounding countryside is blessed with a number of lakes varying in size, a paradise for walkers. You walk through gentle forest roads and paths magically transformed by fresh layers of snow.

Your base is in the delightful and cosy, 700-year-old town of Füssen, just north of the Austrian border. Its attractive location on the edge of the Alps never fails to captivate visitors. Formed by imposing peaks and an idyllic lakeland area, this was the inspiration for Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. At an altitude of 800 metres, it is amongst the highest towns in Bavaria.

This is the Königswinkel, home to Bavaria’s most charming attractions such as the stunning and beautifully located palace castles of Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, and Linderhof, 'places of paradise', as King Ludwig II used to call them. The introverted king built the castles in order to withdraw from public life. Today, ironically, hordes of tourists come in their masses to view his private refuge; luckily, we visit in the quieter winter months, avoiding the crowds. The first departure will allow us to see the New Year in this winter wonderland.

Many of the escape scenes in the 1963 film “The Great Escape” were filmed in and around Füssen and you will see some of these.

And at the end of a pleasant day’s walking in this winter paradise, you can relax in the welcoming, family run spa and wellness hotel, and admire the surrounding alpine scenery.

As with all winter activities snow cannot be guaranteed. However, the walks are equally spectacular with or without snow. Please take this itinerary as a guide to what walks we might do. The day to day itinerary will be chosen to make the best of the conditions.

Inspired by French art, it was built between 1870-1878 as a private royal villa in the style of the Trianon Pavilion in the park of Versailles with grottos, water jets and terraced gardens. It became Ludwig’s refuge and he spent the last years of his life living in here. Our walk will take us up to both castles. We will take lunch at one or the other. Coming back down by another route we pass by Wallfahrtskirche Maria Hilf Speiden. This church also appears in the film. We then take the train back to Füssen.

You leave the hotel and follow the high route along the ridge overlooking Füssen, all the way along to the breath-taking Zweiseenblick (Two Lakes Viewpoint).  One of these lakes is the Alatsee, tucked away at the head of a beautiful wooded valley, and it is to the Alatsee that we descend for a coffee (and maybe a strudel) at the ‘Alatsee Hotel’.  We then walk around the lake and (optionally) climb up to the Austrian border for a picnic lunch overlooking what must surely be the best view of the holiday.  Our return is along the aforementioned wooded valley, passing frozen lakes beneath towering cliffs, to the spa area of Füssen called “Bad Faulenbach”. It is likely we will reach the highest point on the holiday at 1100m on this walk.

Passports and Visas

European Passport Advice

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must meet the Schengen area rules.

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

For some Schengen countries your passport may need to be less than 10 years old during your whole visit, and the 3 months at the end of your visit may need to be within 10 years of your passport’s issue date.

Check both the issue date and the expiry date in your passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old.

Non British Passport holders should consult the host country’s embassy for applicable passport and visa entry requirements.

Meals

Breakfasts and dinners are included and will be taken in the hotel. The restaurant serves an excellent range of healthy food with high-quality, regionally sourced ingredients. The chef is particularly proud of the wonderful Bavarian specialities they produce. Dinners are a full four courses with a choice of main.

Water To Go

Opting for filtered water from a reusable bottle with its built-in water filter, like the Water-to-go bottle available at www.watertogo.eu, is a sustainable alternative to single-use sealed water bottles. Simply refill it from any water source and contribute to saving the environment from disposable plastic bottles.

Exciting news: Water-to-go has introduced two new bottles to their collection. The Active bottle is designed to fit bike water bottle holders, and the Sugarcane bottle is an even more planet-friendly option. Crafted from fibrous cane, a by-product of liquid extraction, it undergoes a process to create plant-based plastic. Explore the details on the Water-to-Go website for this innovative new range.

As a token of appreciation for your commitment to the environment, we've secured an exclusive 15% discount with Water-to-Go for you. Visit www.watertogo.eu and use the code RWW15 during your order.

Travel Insurance

It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.

The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses (including the consequences of a Covid positive test result), mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.

Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.

In the event that you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.

No refunds will be made should you be excluded from the walking programme through being uninsured or you being unable to demonstrate that you are insured.

Our house broker MPI should be considered for whom we are an affiliate and contact information is on our website and will be referred to in your booking confirmation.

If you are travelling to an EU country or Switzerland please also ensure that you have either an existing valid EU EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) or a valid UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). You can apply for a UK GHIC free of charge on the NHS website at https://services.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/cra/start.

EHIC & GHIC Cards

Starting January 1st, 2021, you, as a UK traveller, can continue using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) throughout its valid five-year period, granting you access to medical assistance during your holiday until its expiry date. Be aware, though, that this coverage will no longer extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. In case you don't have a valid EHIC, you can apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will replace the EHIC as it gets phased out.

It's essential to emphasize that the EHIC/GHIC, while valuable, should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive medical or travel insurance. For your peace of mind and comprehensive coverage, considering additional insurance is highly recommended.

Additionally, our Trust invites applications for small grants from local organizations in the UK that require support for walking-oriented activities. This encompasses initiatives such as establishing footpaths and bridleways, funding for the reconstruction of bridges and refurbishing huts, and bursary funding for organisations that support individuals to enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors..
