Our holiday walking grades

Grade 3

Easy countryside walking with plenty of breaks, normally taking up the whole day.

Most of these holidays have an element of sightseeing.

You are unlikely to walk more than 6 miles and the cumulative ascents and descents will be gradual and range from minimal to 300m.

Holiday Highlights

  • Visit Berlin's main historic attractions; Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin Wall, and Check Point Charlie, with a knowledgable local guide
  • Wander the extensive Botanical Gardens of Berlin.
  • Walk from Wannsee Villa to Peacock Island
  • Marvel at the splendour of Sanssouci Palace before standing on the famous Bridge of Spies
  • Travel across Berlin quickly and easily with the 5 day Berlin Pass included in our price
  • 5 day Berlin Welcome Pass included in the holiday cost.

Around every corner in Berlin, there are physical reminders of this city’s turbulent past. Capital since the 13th Century, and over time, influenced by some of history’s most prominent figures. Just in the 20th Century Berlin has seen Nazi occupation and Iron Curtain division.

Walking to the city’s most historic landmarks, our local guide will talk us through Berlin’s fascinating past along the way.  At the Brandenburg Gate, we’ll learn its significance to the unification of east and west following the collapse of the Berlin Wall. Then, we’ll see remaining sections of the Berlin Wall itself at the east side gallery, before a visit to the infamous Checkpoint Charlie.

While away the afternoon at Berlin’s famed Botanical Gardens. Its ornately built glass domes and 43-hectare grounds provide a luscious sanctuary from the bustle of the city. Or, if you prefer, take some time to explore Berlin at your own pace using your travel pass.

For our remaining two days, we head into the suburbs around Potsdam. Wannsee Villa, a bright and elegant Italian estate, hides some of world history’s darkest moments. Now an educational museum, the Villa is dedicated to honouring victims of The Holocaust by retelling their stories.

Our final day is around Sanssouci Palace, rivalling in grandeur the French Palace of Versailles. Built for a Prussian King, Fredrick the Great, the palace oozes rococo glamour; pastel-lemon frontages are embellished with hand-carved stone cherubs. Roam the Palace’s stylish interior and pristine ornamental gardens before stopping off at the famed ‘Bridge of Spies’.

Winter walking

In December, Berlin boasts an enchanting Christmas wonderland. Towering Native spruces line snowy streets, the city glows with magical fairy lights and traditional wood-carved decorations.

Take some free time to visit Berlin’s world-renowned Christmas markets to browse artisanal crafts and sample the customary refreshments; delicious Currywurst and crispy Schnitzels. Some days are on the chilly side, with temperatures reaching as low as -10 degrees; ensure you pack cosy layers, walking poles and ice grippers.

Itinerary & Travel

Itinerary Details

Whilst every effort will be made to adhere to the outlined itinerary and advertised programme, local conditions can change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. This may mean that routes and timings need to be amended or the order of days may change, sometimes at short notice.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we may unfortunately need to withdraw a tour that is currently confirmed to operate and we therefore reserve the right to cancel your booking. We would always do our utmost to give you plenty of notice should we have to do this. Selected elements of this tour, including local attractions and restaurants, may change at late notice. Please ensure you have valid insurance cover before you travel.

Your Itinerary

Day 1

Welcome to Berlin

Dinner in a local restaurant

Our city break lands at Berlin Airport. After collecting our luggage we meet our leader and take the public train/tram into the city centre. From here we have short 10 minute walk to our hotel. Aswe walk to the hotel you may wish to consider luggage with wheels.

After dropping your luggage into your rooms, if time allows, our leader will show you where you can find any extra amenities you might need during your stay such as supermarkets, pharmacies and ATMs.

Transfer Time = 40 minute train, 10 minute walk

Day 2

Getting to know Berlin

Breakfast, Dinner in a local restaurant

Our morning starts with a local guide at the Brandenburg Gate, the start point for our walking tour. The Brandenburg Gate signifies the re-joining of the east and west districts following the collapse of the Berlin Wall. As we walk further into the city we visit the remaining sections of the Berlin Wall and other key sights before finishing up at the well know Checkpoint Charlie.

In the afternoon we visit the Berlin Botanical Gardens, which makes for a lovely afternoon's wandering amongst some 22,000 species of plants spread over 43 hectares. Should the visit to the Botanical Garden not be of interest to you why not take sometime to explore the city centre further on your own with the use of your 5 day Berlin Card.

Day 3

A walk to Wannsee Villa and Peacock Island

We take the bus to the Potsdam district where we walk to Wannsee Villa, bright and elegant today and built in the Italian Style but hides a darker past. In 1942 the Nazis Government held a conference to answer the 'Final Solution to the Jewish Question'. The Wannsee Villa Conference centre as it is now known is dedicated to exposing this criminal meeting. From here we continue on our route to Peacock Island to view the fairy tale style castle on the island. Apart from the peacocks, strutting the lawns, displaying their plumage, the island is home to lots of wildlife from woodpeckers to innumerable frogs.

Day 4

The Elegance of Sanssouci Palace

Breakfast, Dinner in a local restaurant

Sanssouci Palace, the summer residence of the Prussian King Frederick offers us a day amongst spectacular architecture and beautifully laid out gardens. Starting our day with a trip out into the suburbs on public transport to Potsdam to visit its sprawling grounds. Highlights include its opulent staircase leading from its fountain to the front door! The park land around Sanssouci is a wonderful area to spend the afternoon walking before we get back onto the bus and stop off at the 'Bridge of Spies'.

The Bridge of Spies was made famous recently by Tom Hanks, starring in a film of the same name telling the story of one of the most famous spy exchanges to have taken place on the bridge during the cold war.

The Spy Museum is a curious insight into the world of espionage, although not included in our holiday program it does tie in nicely to our stop off at the Bridge of Spies.

Day 5

Sadly it is time to say Auf Wiedersehen to beautiful Berlin as we take public transport back to the airport for our onward journeys to the UK.

This is Grade 3/SS holiday includes half and full day walks at a moderate pace. The majority of the holiday involves city walking with a local guide. Half day walking will probably include about 4 hours of walking. Expect ascents and descents of up to 600m. Some days are outside the city on well made paths around the local countryside of which fuller days of relaxed walking can be expected. See the 'Proposed Itinerary' section for more information.

Local Transport Costs

All local transport costs in conjunction with the advertised activity programme are included in the holiday cost. The card allows you to explore Berlin at our own pace by providing free use of public transport in the city, admission to many museums and attractions either free or discounted. When budgeting for your holiday, you will need to consider drinks, any meals not included in the holiday price, non-included entrance fees, optional excursions you may choose to participate in locally and any souvenirs or additional services such as laundry. Currency in Germany

The currency in Germany is the euro .

Although entirely at your own discretion, tipping is an important aspect of tourism and hospitality life and expectations are fairly high. In order to simplify tipping, we strongly recommend that you allow your leader to take care of making sure tips are given to hotel and restaurant staff and to local guides and drivers. This will be done using some funds provided by us together with, if you wish, a contribution from you, which he/she will collect during the holiday.

Entry Requirements

General Passport Advice

It is a good idea to carry photocopies of the personal details pages of your passport. Should you lose your passport, this may assist with the issue of replacement documents and your return to your home country.

Passport and visa requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you inform yourself from a professionally qualified source on, and comply with, such requirements.

General passport advice for UK nationals on the UK Government website.

FCDO Travel Advice

You must ensure you check all entry requirements in good time by reviewing the official FCDO advice for your destination. Please take time to read and regularly check this website for changes to the entry requirements and any local restrictions.

Proof of Covid-19 Vaccination

You may be required to provide proof that you have been fully vaccinated when travelling or in your destination. Proof of vaccination can either be digital via the NHS app or a printed copy via NHS Hard Copy. We recommend allowing seven working days for your printed copy to arrive. Please note both the NHS app and printed copy are only valid for 30 days.

We anticipate that all travellers will need to be fully vaccinated including the booster jab and to carry proof of this with them at all times. Some indoor venues require, and may ask for proof of vaccination, as well as masks becoming mandatory for indoor public spaces, and we ask you to be prepared for this.

Face Masks

Some airlines or destinations are requiring the wearing of FFP2, FFP3, KN95 or N95 masks without a valve. You should check the FCDO advice for your destination and with your airline before you travel, although you may wish to have one of these masks on hand just in case.

Brexit Passport Advice

If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must meet the Schengen area rules.

Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:

  • less than 10 years old on the day you enter (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

The guidance for Schengen border guards may not be updated until the spring of 2022. Until then, for some Schengen countries your passport may need to be less than 10 years old during your whole visit, and the 3 months at the end of your visit may need to be within 10 years of your passport’s issue date.

Check both the issue date and the expiry date in your passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old.

Non British Passport holders should consult the host country’s embassy for applicable passport and visa entry requirements.

Breakfasts are taken at the hotel. On three evenings your leader will take you to a variety of characterful local restaurants where you can really sample German cuisine. Dinner is not included on one evening so you can explore Berlin's restaurants independently.

Lunches are not included but with the hotel being in the town centre you are spoilt for choice as to where to buy a picnic.

Cultural Awareness

Responsible Travel

We're committed to ethical tourism in all our destinations. Our holidays are designed for you to discover the essence of the country you are visiting. Travelling in small groups not only gives you an up close and personal experience of your destination, but minimises your impact on the immediate environment. We feel that the most important starting point to protect the environment is to be out in it. For more details visit our website.

The Ramblers Holidays Charitable Trust

Unlike many tour operators we have our own trust through which RWH Travel’s profits are channelled back into a variety of outdoor, walking-related or environmental conservation projects in the UK. The focus of the Trust’s financial support is Britain’s leading walking charity, The Ramblers, and their role in promoting the benefits and importance of walking to the British public. In addition the Trust welcomes applications for small grants from local organisations in the UK who need support for walking-orientated activities. This includes the establishment of footpaths and bridleways, funding for rebuilding bridges and renovating huts, as well as bursary funding for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for children who could not otherwise afford to do it. Please visit the ‘About Us’ section of our website and click on the Charitable Trust link for more details.

Heart and Sole

We appreciate that we are in a fortunate position to be able to use our profits to help make a difference to people's lives. Heart & Sole is a venture managed by our office staff, whose aim is to reach the heart of the communities in the countries we visit. Through Heart & Sole, we hope to make more of a long term, direct impact to these communities, particularly in less developed countries where even a small amount goes a long way. See our website for more information and details of some of the projects we support.

Staying In Touch

Mobile Phones

Please do provide us with a mobile phone contact number. We will only use this to contact you with important information relating to your holiday arrangements.

Do keep your mobile phones switched on and readily available when travelling to the airport or if delayed in transit so that we can contact you with any last minute information relating to your travel arrangements.

As a matter of courtesy, please switch off your mobile phone during walks, or endeavour to minimise its use. Please also try to minimise the use of mobile devices during group meals.
