There is much to reflect on in Cuba, a lesson in cigar making, a trip in a 1950’s taxi or the time warp experience of Spanish colonial cities. Perhaps muse on Cuba’s unique political experiment, the facts are well known but always worthy of further consideration whilst taking a reflective Mojito at the end of the day. Then let the music catch your attention, it is never far away and an essential part of any Cuban visit.

We fly into Havana and enjoy an evening to acquaint ourselves briefly with the music, sights and atmosphere of one of the most distinctive capital cities in the world. Then we head east to walk in the mountains at Topes de Collantes before reaching Trinidad, one of the best preserved colonial cities in the Americas. Whilst here we stay in ‘Casa Particulares’, Cuban houses, to get an idea of local life.

We have a long drive to Holguin, great for people watching in the town square after dinner and continue to Baracoa at the eastern end of the island. From here we walk to tropical beaches for a swim and perhaps some fresh fruit from a local farmer. Coconut milk just tastes better when you're sat under the tree where the coconut grew. We then enjoy a long day stopping in Santiago for lunch and sightseeing before reaching Bayamo. We walk to Castro’s command centre, a fascinating insight into what happened during the revolution.

We continue west with a night in Camagüey and a cycle taxi tour of the town, before staying by the Hanabanilla reservoir, a lovely relaxing place to walk and unwind. Finally we arrive back into Havana for our final night and plenty of time to enjoy the magnetic attraction of this lively city. The perfect place to end a unique holiday.

This holiday has a pioneer status to indicate the spirit of adventure, as things may not always go as expected – it’s the Cuban way! Visit soon – with the new spirit of entente, Cuba is changing fast and isn’t going to remain like this forever.
