CANARIES & NORTH AFRICA

Exploring mountains, volcanoes and gorges of the Canaries

Our cruises to the Canary Islands also take in the Portuguese ports of Madeira and Lisbon, and some include North Africa’s Casablanca or Agadir. These cruises really show what Cruise & Walk is all about. New islands every day offer superb mountain walking in an ideal climate. Volcanic islands with a mixture of forested slopes, high level trails, combined with bizarre rock & sand landscapes plus some city sights too.

Our unique shore walks and excursions include:

Tenerife: Dominated by 3000m Mt Teide, we walk in the Canadas National Park through the beautiful desert-like terrain.

La Palma: An island separated in two by a dramatic ridge. We walk along a spectacular high-level trail with views of the 120 volcanoes on the island.

Gran Canaria: A mini continent due to its mixture of climates, our time on this island is spent descending through pine woods, barrancos and small hamlets.

Lanzarote: An island with a stark volcanic landscape where we walk along the cliffs in the south of the island between long sandy beaches.

Madeira: Our countryside walk takes us high up into the mountains on the levadas, water channels which allow the rains to irrigate the comparatively dry south.

Lisbon: A local guide takes us through the narrow cobbled streets of the old town’s romantically named districts, including Belém and Alfama.

Casablanca: Location of the legendary 1942 film, we have a local guide to take us on a city tour including visits to Hassan II Mosque, Ancient Medina, Notre Dame Church, the Lighthouse and Mohammed V Square.

Agadir: We walk through the Oued Massa nature reserve adjacent to the Atlantic, returning to Agadir, including a visit to a souk en route.

Please note that ports may differ between individual departures, please check the itinerary link against your chosen departure in the Dates, Prices & Holiday Information Sheet tab.

    Black Watch

Before the jet set arrived, cruise ships were once the height of style, charm and sophistication and Black Watch harks back to the heyday of the cruise liner. Delightfully relaxed in mood and reassuringly human in scale, resplendent Black Watch offers you the best of all cruise worlds. Having undergone a refurbishment of the ship’s public areas in late 2009, her fresh sophisticated décor with many traditional cruising features ensures you feel welcome from the moment you step aboard.

Black Watch has a total of 423 cabins and carries 804 passengers (standard occupancy). The ship has a friendly attentive crew of 330. On board facilities include two swimming pools, a fitness centre, a sauna, a beauty salon, a sun deck, Jacuzzis, several lounges and bars, a card room, library, internet room and restaurants. The ship has a medical centre, and a shop where you can buy essentials such as sun cream or toiletries. There is also a launderette and ironing room on board.

After dinner in the Glentanar Restaurant there are always shows, reviews and evenings of cabaret for your entertainment. Choose from the Neptune Lounge for an evening show or perhaps head to The Observatory for an after dinner drink. If we return late to the ship, or if you would like a more casual dinner, the Braemar Garden Café will make you very welcome.

Our accommodation is in twin cabins with shower and WC. All cabins are equipped with individually controlled air conditioning, television, hairdryers, tea and coffee making facilities. Black Watch has a non-smoking policy for all areas of the ship. Allocated cabins will be an outside cabin unless you have paid a supplement to upgrade. Your cabin steward will keep your cabin in immaculate condition throughout your stay, replacing any linen or towels as or when required. Separate towels are provided for poolside use. Safes are available at reception. Black Watch operates a satellite telephone system, with telephones in each cabin, and personal mobile phones enabled for international roaming should work on board.

The voltage on board Black Watch is supplied at 110 volts – 60 cycle (a U.S. style 2 pin plug is required) and 220 volt 60 cycle (requiring a continental style 2-pin plug). If you are in any doubt as to the appropriate voltage to use your electrical appliances on board, please check with the ship’s Reception Desk. Adapters are usually available for hire on board, or may be bought at the ship’s shop. Payment on board is in Sterling, and a credit account system is operated on board allowing purchases to be charged to your account which must be settled at the end of your cruise – see the Currency section for more details. Deck plans for the Black Watch can be viewed at the following address: http://www.fredolsencruises.com/our-ships/our-cruise-ships/black-watch/deck-plans/black-watch.
