This departure: Grade 4

  1. Day 1

We fly to Lisbon Airport and transfer to Abrantes.

  2. Day 2

We discover Abrantes and its history today. We walk alongside the green and luxurious river banks of the longest Portuguese river, the Tejo River.

  3. Day 3

Our walk takes us along ancient trails and through wooded hills around Sardoal, a charming village above Abrantes. It is the ‘garden village’, characterised by its typical white houses and abundance of colourful flowers.

  4. Day 4

Today we transfer to Nazare by private coach. We visit Tomar en route where we walk along the relaxed banks of the River Nabao towards town. We have lunch and time to explore the city before continuing to our next centre.

  5. Day 5

Our walk brings us to the charming village of S. Martinho do Porto, to the south of Nazare. The village, once a commercial port for receiving the boats that carried wood to build the caravels in which we discovered the new world, is famously known for its magnificent scalloped shaped bay, white sandy beaches and calm blue waters.

  6. Day 6

We walk on Sao Bras Hill, a protected area and remarkable magmatic mound covered by pine woodlands. It was once a beacon for adrift boats due to its visibility 35km into the sea.

  7. Day 7

We take a walk through the countryside and woodland into the traditional town of Alcobaca where we find the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Monastery of Santa Maria.

  8. Day 8

We say goodbye to the silver coast and transfer to Lisbon airport for our return flight to the UK.

Our Accommodation on this holiday

Below is the accommodation featured on this holiday. If you are on a multi-centre holiday, these are highlights of the places where we stay. Please refer to your Holiday Information sheet (which can be found under View Departures & Book), for your departure date and for all your accommodation details.

Hotel Mare

Nazare is located along the silver coast, named for its spectacular silver beaches dotted with singing windmills and traditional fishing villages. Nazare is an authentic fishing village and is one of the most famous in Portugal. It has stunning beaches and is beautifully located in between its crescent-shaped sandy beach on one side and the rocky promontory of Sitio on the other. Delight in the colourful wooden and elegant fishing boats still used today with their typical curved prows drawn up on the sandy beach amongst the drying nets.

The Hotel Mare has been run by the Della Torre family for more than 40 years and retains a family friendly atmosphere. You couldn’t ask for a better place to stay to take on the beautiful Campanian coastline, with the hotel set right on the beach, where you can wander down to watch the sunsets. The three star hotel has an outdoor pool and Mediterranean garden with a bar and pizzeria. As well as being by the beach the hotel is well located near the old area of Agropoli. Excellent local cuisine is served in the restaurant, including the great seafood from this region, and this is where we take breakfasts and dinners. The spacious bedrooms are pleasantly appointed with hairdryer, air conditioning, TV and a telephone. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.

Luna Hotel Turismo

Abrantes is a beautiful city located on the river Tejo and is full of history from Celtic and Roman times. Due to its geographical location, Abrantes was of strategically military importance but also a crucial commercial port on the banks of a major river. Today it is a thriving yet peaceful town decorated with whitewashed houses and cobbled streets, and is considered to have the richest floral decoration in the whole country!

We stay in the four star Luna Hotel Turismo, located in the central area of Abrantes where you are surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. This recently renovated modern boutique hotel is charming. Its panoramic restaurant uses local ingredients to create local delicacies.

The wellness centre including outdoor pool, sauna, whirlpool bath, Turkish bath and gym are ideal for relaxing after a day exploring the region.

Rooms are bright yet simple with ensuite facilities. They are equipped with TVs, safes, minibars, hair dryer, air conditioning and free WIFI.
