Explore the hidden wonders of the Alpujarras Valleys, a captivating region nestled between the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada range and the northern Sierras of Lujar, La Contraviesa, and Gador, deep within the heart of Andalucia. Our passionate team has been intimately acquainted with these valleys and mountains since 1990, and we've uncovered trails and secrets that even the locals may not know.
Our base, the charming village of Capileira, is perched at an elevation of 1400 meters, offering panoramic views above the Poqueira Gorge. Here, you'll be surrounded by the majestic beauty of mountains and terraced orchards, vineyards, and olive groves nourished by the intricate network of deep gorges. Capileira is the perfect starting point for numerous scenic walks, with a myriad of paths leading in all directions.
This rugged yet astonishingly picturesque landscape is also home to mainland Spain's highest peak, Mulhacen, standing tall at 3479 meters. Its name harks back to the days when the Moors cultivated these valleys. Weather permitting, we'll ascend high into the slopes of Mulhacen, offering breath taking vistas of the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Mediterranean to the south.
Another captivating hike begins right from your hotel and winds its way through six charming local villages. Here, you'll witness red peppers and onions drying in the sun against whitewashed walls, and life unfolds at a tranquil pace. The circular 'Route of the Acequias' takes us deep into the untamed and remote valley below Mulhacen, following ancient irrigation channels.
On a beautiful, long traverse along the GR 240, also known as 'Sulayr' (inspired by the Moors' name for the Sierra Nevada - 'Mountains of the Sun'), you'll ascend to Trevelez, the highest village in Spain at 1700 meters.
Capileira itself is a delightful village, with its cobbled alleyways, artisan shops, and restaurants serving authentic Alpujarran cuisine. As the locals say, '¡Aqui se come muy bien!' - Here, one eats very well!
