Walking Holidays in England

Our walking holidays in England explore Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with the chance to contrast the country’s verdant rolling hills, rugged coasts and imposing mountains. We’ve been helping people to go walking in England for more than 75 years, during which time we’ve gathered the experience to guide you to must-see sites and secret corners.

Climb fells and duck into valleys in Wainwright country in the Lake District, using our own base, Hassness Country House, to immerse yourself here. Contrast the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales with the heather-clad slopes and rugged coastline of the North Yorkshire Moors. Look for timeworn castles and empty beaches in Northumberland or seek out the quintessential countryside of picture postcards and coffee table books in the Cotswolds. Walk the hilltops and gorges of Britain’s first national park in the Peak District, or join a walking holiday in the South Downs to discover England’s newest national park.

Walk historical trails, including Hadrian’s Wall Path and Offa’s Dyke National Trail; explore the heart of England in-depth on the Cotswold Way and get a feel for the South West Coast Path in Devon and Cornwall. Or, for something less strenuous, embrace England’s history, traditions, and regional food scene on carefully crafted city breaks and UK city walking tours where local guides will bring their beloved cities and towns to life.

Our holiday walking grades

Moderate

Grade 4

Usually, your walk will take up the whole day at a moderate pace. Terrain will often be hilly and paths generally good. Note that on holidays in mountainous areas, expect some rougher paths. An average walk length is 6 miles but expect this to vary from as little as 3 miles on a sightseeing day and up to 10 miles on a full day dependant on the amount of ascent and decent required.

Usual daily walks - Distance: 6 miles; Ascent/Descent 500m; Terrain: sometimes hilly and undulating on good paths and tracks; Walking Time: Day walks.

Challenging

Grade 7

These holidays are typically in mountainous areas where stamina is important to be able to enjoy longer days. There is plenty of ascent and descent on some rough and steep paths that require good footwear, a steady foot, and a good head for heights. Some days may be shorter in distance or ascent/descent, but the overall effort levels required are of a higher nature.

Usual daily walks - Distance: 10 miles; Ascent/Descent 950m; Terrain: varied with rough, rocky and steep sections; Walking Time: 8hrs+ / Long Days.
