Wild Walking in the Pyrenees
The pristine world of the Aigües Tortes National Park
OverviewThis high level adventure explores the wildest and most pristine of the great mountain ranges of Western Europe, in an area special and beautiful enough to be designated a National Park.
It‘s a jumbled world of granite boulders, bewitching tarns, cascading waters (‘aigües tortes’ means ‘twisted waters’) and dark green pines that can be viewed from summits of just below the 3,000m mark. In kind conditions huge vistas can be enjoyed of endless ridges stretching from Andorra in the east to the Pyrenean highpoint, the glaciated Pico de Aneto (3404m), to
the west.
A fascinating, if unfamiliar, culture holds sway as the area is a part of Catalonia. Whilst standards are overall not as high as in the Alps, Catalan efficiency and organisational prowess make our refuges welcoming and enjoyable sojourns, some in idyllic settings by mountain lakes. You will be pleasantly surprised by the substantial and varied breakfasts with real coffee provided by some refuges. All usually offer large salads and fresh fruit as part of the evening meal.
Salardu, a small town in the isolated Val d’Aran is our starting and finishing point. We stay in eight other refuges.
