Western Mediterranean

Coastal walking and sightseeing in springtime sunshine.
Overview

In the spring the Iberian coastline is fresh and inviting; even around Almeria plants are in bloom after the sparse winter rains. In the autumn the sea is still warm and the cities still beautiful! Our cruises combine coastal walking with sightseeing, from the wild coast of the Algarve to the splendour of Gaudi’s Barcelona.

From Portimão on Portugal’s southern coast we walk between Luz and Salema, through the herb-filled cliff-top garrigue and across remote sandy coves. From Almeria we walk along the Cabo de Gata coast, between pueblos blancos and striking scenery. A day is split between Gibraltar, where we walk on the Rock, and the Spanish Moroccan enclave of Ceuta across the straits.

From Cartagena we walk in the beautiful Sierra de Espuña and from Alicante hike around Puig Compana at around 3,000ft, inland from the Costa del Sol.

From Toulon we take a cable car to walk in the hills above the city. From Trapani we’ll visit the beautifully sited ancient temple at Segusta and stroll in the local countryside. On Minorca and Malta we mix lovely coastal walking with visits to picturesque towns.

On our full day in Seville there is so much to see. the Cathedral, Alcazar and Barrio Santo Cruz are worth the cruise in themselves. In Barcelona the Barri Gotic and Ramblas promenade are highlights of any holiday. From Leixoes we visit Oporto, where a local guide will show us the narrow streets, harbour and no doubt take us to a port bodega and in Cádiz we will have a guided sightseeing tour.

We have graded the holiday D SS, but there is probably walking and active sightseeing in equal measure.

Please do check the individual itineraries for your chosen date as each departure varies!

Weekend walking became more important than a corporate career in management for Julian, so he quit and qualified as a full time tour leader for Ramblers Worldwide Holidays. He believes that it's the best way to discover and observe the world and meet like minded people.
