Walking on the island of Evia
Coastal and mountain walking in this little known corner of Greece.
OverviewThe island of Evia, conveniently located just a short ferry trip from mainland Greece, has a surprisingly remote feel. It is an idyllic destination with picturesque villages, stunning landscape, magnificent beaches, gorges and ridges. Wildflowers in spring are abundant.
After a short transfer from Athens airport to the port of Rafina, we take the ferry to Evia, and continue by road to the pleasant and lively town of Karystos, in the southernmost part of the island. From here we can explore the dramatic slopes of the region’s highest mountain, Ochi, and discover its green valleys, unique vegetation and flowing streams. We can follow traditional paths, sometimes cobbled in stone, discovering traces of ancient civilisation in abandoned marble quarries and the mysterious drakospito or dragon houses, one of which sits at the very summit of Mount Ochi. Our programme ranges from gentle village walks to more challenging mountain paths.
