Walking on Fuerteventura
Plains, hills and coasts of a lesser explored Atlantic island.
OverviewThe least developed of the Canaries; Fuerteventura has largely escaped the indiscriminate coastal development of the other islands of the archipelago. With year round sunshine and an average temperature of 20 degrees centigrade its equable dry climate, coastal walking, and endless remote beaches make it the perfect destination for activity holidays.
Because of the special topography rainfall is rare. The island is a geologist’s paradise, for practically every volcanic rock formation known to man can be seen there. Walking amongst the red rocks of the interior can be like exploring another planet.
The interior has striking landscapes of ancient volcanoes, dry steppe and rolling sandy hills lined with stone terraces. The picturesque villages contain some of the oldest churches of the entire Canaries. Local people are used to a relaxed slow pace of life and are friendly to visitors in a genuine unspoiled way.
Walking is growing in popularity throughout the island which is developing a series of marked paths. In the middle of the island one trek visits the old historic town of Betancuria, the first European settlement in the Atlantic. Close by, a path leads to a rocky ravine with the tiny chapel to the Virgen de la Pena perched on the side.
