Walking in the mountains of Tuscany
Mountain walking from San Marcello
OverviewSan Marcello in Tuscany is our popular centre in the Apennine Mountains. Here the summits reach almost 2000m; the lower slopes are clothed in open deciduous woodland. Look out for signs of the wild boar that roam the hills in these parts. In spring masses of wild flowers abound, the autumn offers beautiful colours and generally clear skies throughout October. The upper ridges are more open with excellent views and the whole area has a good system of routes and tracks. We walk in the hills and visit attractive villages including Cutigliano, dating from the Middle Ages and the village of Gavignana. We’ll walk on sections of two well-known long-distance routes, the ‘Montagna Pistoiese Trekking’ and the ‘Great Apennine Excursion’, both of which pass close to San Marcello. For one or two weeks we have a great array of walking to choose from providing variety and spectacular scenery each day.
The Apennine mountains form the watershed between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna. From the open grassy ridges we can enjoy spectacular views across the Po valley to the north and the Arno valley to the south.
We’re in the province of Pistoia, and its main town, also Pistoia, with its cathedral and other fine buildings, is easily visited for shopping and sightseeing using the local bus. Florence, Pisa, Lucca and Bologna – all easily visited by bus or train – are all well known for their fine buildings, history and culture.
Two-week holidays include two excursions: one to Lucca and another to Florence by public transport (*one week holidays only include the Lucca visit).
