Walking in Samos & Patmos
Walking on two islands of the Eastern Aegean
OverviewSamos is arguably one of the most verdant and beautiful islands of the Eastern Aegean. A chain of mountains divides the island, from Karvouni in the east to Kerkis in the extreme west the northern coastline is rocky and often precipitous, but south of the mountains the landscape opens up into rich wooded valleys and plains running down to lovely beaches, beautiful countryside, picturesque villages, old churches and the occasional ancient monastery.
Patmos is an irregularly shaped beautiful, hilly island measuring just six miles by ten. During the Roman Empire it was described as dry and desolate, but in the Middle Ages it became so cultivated that Italians called it Palmosa, the island of palms. It has a wildly undulating coastline of coves and headlands, hidden beaches and the monastery of Chora, which commands an impressive viewpoint over the main harbour.
On this holiday we’ll discover these most beautiful and contrasting islands of Greece’s eastern Aegean. We go native and slow the pace right down as we explore rugged coastlines, follow mule tracks and trails past olive groves and vineyards, stop in hillside villages and often end our walks at a quiet beach for a swim. We’ll have the chance to sample wonderful Greek cuisine and locally produced wines at traditional tavernas and cafès. We travel by between the islands by ferry.
