Walking in Las Alpujarras
Here we walk amidst alpine pasture and old stone cortijos in the heart of the Sierra Nevada
OverviewThe Alpujarras are the lovely southern valleys of the Sierra Nevada. Cut off by high ridges from the Costa del Sol, we are amidst alpine pasture and old stone cortijos. The lush valleys are watered by mountain streams which descend from Mulhacen and Veleta, the highest peaks in mainland Spain. At this altitude, there are very few trees to interrupt views!
Capileira is perched above the Poqueira Gorge, a lovely place in itself and an excellent walking centre. This village was founded by the Moors over 500 years ago.
We mainly walk along narrow stony trails, steep at times. The walks aren’t long, but there is plenty of up and down. Several walks start at the hotel - most finish at a bar! If you haven’t been to the Alpujarras, it’s time to go.

John has been a compulsive traveller and walks leader since high school. Having completed the Three Peaks challenge of ascending Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon within 24 hours he's also clearly got an adventurous streak. These days he leads mainly in Greece and Turkey with the odd trip to other destinations which have attracted his attention.![]()
