Walking in Grazalema

One week of walking and exploring Andalucia's premier Natural Park
Overview

Grazalema is a jewel in its own stunning natural park of semi-wilderness country – a pristine village nestling at 823m on a hillside, surrounded by beautiful and protected wooded mountains, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in Andalucia.

Traditional whitewashed houses, narrow, steep cobblestone streets and picturesque vistas greet the visitor. In the 19th century the village profited from the local industries of textile, wool and agriculture and since then the population has dwindled as these industries have faded.  However, local products such as woollen rugs and blankets, pork meats and pastries are still made in Grazalema today and demonstrate the resilience of the local people.

The surrounding Parque Natural offers a wealth of walking opportunities of which we take maximum advantage – to rugged limestone peaks and through verdant mountain pastures filled with flowers in the spring and to and from delightful mountain villages like Benaocaz and Benamahoma. The extraordinary microclimate of the Grazalema region makes the Sierra de Grazalema one of the most ecologically important in Spain. Highlights include walks to the Sierra del Pinar, with its rare Pinsapo pines and the ‘Goatherd’s Leap’, to watch the many birds of prey. Most of the programme will involve local walks but each one is different, the variety of terrain and scenery in such a small area is quite remarkable. We will ramble through quiet villages and the surrounding countryside. More challenging routes include walking across the sierras, the Endrinal, Peñon Grande and Morena. The mountains of the Sierra de Grazalema rise to over 1500m providing some beautiful scenery.

We may spend a day visiting Ronda (20 miles away) to see its spectacular gorge and the Puente Nuevo that spans this natural wonder. Ronda is an old Moorish town, which even those who are not usually keen on sightseeing are sure to enjoy.

Grazalema provides that wonderful mix of a really good walking programme in excellent country with an interesting ‘Spanish’ village and comfortable hotel to return to each evening.
