Walking on SamosAegean Island hiking on Samos, the best of island life
Samos is arguably one of the most verdant and beautiful islands of the Eastern Aegean. The rugged northern coastline is scattered with steep sided coves and picturesque bays, while south of the dividing mountains, the landscape opens up to rich wooded valleys and plains, beautiful beaches and quiet, traditional villages. The island has endless olive groves, citrus orchards and vineyards, the latter producing the famous Samian wine.
The upper part of Samos Town, known as Vathy, away from the hustle and bustle of the harbour and where the air is cooler, is our base as we explore this verdant island. The narrow winding alleyways lead to tranquil shady tavernas and cafés where you can watch the world go by. There is an excellent Archaeological Museum, exhibiting finds from various sites on the island, and the Wine Museum for you to visit on your free day.
Our walks take us on inland tracks past olive groves and vineyards, through quiet mountain villages, and along rugged coastlines, with stunning panoramic views as our reward. We’ll stop in small tavernas for lunch or perhaps enjoy a picnic under a shady tree and we often end our day at a quiet beach for a refreshing swim.
Excursions are also possible (subject to the ferry schedule) to the neighbouring island of Patmos, capped by the imposing Monastery of St John, and to Kusadasi on the Turkish coast, for a visit to the ancient and well preserved site of Ephesus.
In early spring, the island comes alive with an abundance of flora, so our May 01 and May 08 departures allow more leisurely walking to appreciate the outstanding flowers. During our two week holidays there may be some repetition of walks.
