Walking in a Winter Wonderland
A Bulgarian winter adventure.
OverviewStunning mountain scenery, a dash of local folklore, and some tasty regional cooking - welcome to our Bulgarian winter adventure! We’ll enjoy two of Bulgaria’s most attractive regions, the Rhodopi and Rila mountain ranges, landscapes made all the more dramatic in winter when a crisp blanket of snow covers them.
Our first four nights are spent in Velingrad, a picturesque spa-town hidden deep in the Rhodopi Mountains. From here we enjoy some winter walking, using snowshoes when necessary, amidst the attractive scenery of this impressive range, said to be the birthplace of the mythical hero Orpheus.
Moving on, we take the last remaining local Bulgarian mountain train, an experience in itself, high up for a scenic walk along the mountain ridge, before we continue our journey by road to our second base.
Bansko, a traditional ski resort has a magnificent setting at the foot of the Pirin Mountains. Here we have time to explore the Old Town with its cobbled streets and distinctive mehanas (taverns), where we can enjoy a traditional lunch accompanied by local songs and dancing. Our walking will take place in the dramatic scenery of the Pirin Mountains. There’s even a farewell dinner with music - time to let our hair down at the end of the week and celebrate everything Bulgarian!
