Walking from La Palma
A week exploring the Canary Islands' La Palma' - La Isla Bonita'
OverviewLa Palma is a green and beautiful island. Further out into the Atlantic than Tenerife and Gomera, the wild, volcanic theme of the Canaries continues here on this mountainous island with a temperate climate. Lush green ancient laurel forests clothe the lower slopes, giving way higher up to fragrant pine woods, both offering shade and cooler walking. Once above the tree line, however, the island’s volcanic past is revealed, stark and magnificently impressive.
The National Park of Caldera de Taburiente offers wonderful walking in stunning surroundings. There are not just mountains and volcanoes here though; an impressively varied walking programme on this small island also includes ’barrancos’ and fine coastal walks. The 15th century capital of Santa Cruz de la Palma is also well worth a visit, with its picturesque streets, colourful architecture and laid back atmosphere.
Our base for the week is the coastal resort of Playa de los Cancajos, 2.5 miles from the capital Santa Cruz de la Palma.
