Walking from Francavilla in Sicily
A week's walking in a rustic and historical part of Sicily.
OverviewFrancavilla, a real Sicilian town, far removed from the trappings and sophistication of tourism, is a good base. Taormina is only ten miles away, where the Greco-Roman theatre is situated above picturesque narrow streets. The volcano of Etna forms a backdrop to the fertile vineyards and orange groves below. Here, on the rocky coastline where Ulysses voyaged, are sheltered beaches where you can swim in idyllic surroundings.
We include an excursion to Etna with a climb to one of its many subsidiary peaks (subject to local conditions). We can visit ancient Syracuse, the home of Archimedes and Plato. We’ll walk through shady woodlands which rise to open ridges where alpine flowers bloom. Towns perch precariously on rocky mountain tops and nearby are the Alcantara Gorges, where the torrent rushes below vertical lava cliffs. You’re in for a great week!

Hello – I am Misty the Westie and I work for Ramblers Countrywide Holidays in the Leader’s Department. It’s my job to sniff out new hotels and walks and report back to HQ. It’s a dog’s life, I know, but someone’s got to do it! ![]()
