Winter Sunshine on a Miniature Continent
A week exploring the hidden depths of Gran Canaria on a Canary Islands walking holiday
OverviewThe volcanic island of Gran Canaria is a haven of nature, with areas of such vastly differing climates and landscapes that it has been nicknamed ’the miniature continent’.
Much of our walking is based in the central Cumbre, the high mountain range in the centre of the island with its dramatic landscapes and remote cave villages, as well as in the fertile north, where we can venture into deep valleys with lush vegetation. We can discover the pine forests and alpine meadows, sub-tropical valleys, mountain peaks and gorges around the Cruz de Tejeda and walk into the stunning volcanic crater of Caldera de Bandama. In spring the flowers are a delight and much of the flora here is only found on the island due to the unique climate.
We stay in the historic port capital of Las Palmas, once an important trading port on the sea route to the New World. We’ll have time to explore the attractive and historical old quarter of Vegueta and Triana, a short bus ride from our hotel in the more modern quarter where there are shops, restaurants and the magnificent sandy beach of Las Canteras, just a few minutes from our hotel.
