To Innominate Tarn - Highlights of the Wainwright
One of the most famous and challenging walks in Britain
OverviewAlfred Wainwright said 'that from this walk every lake, valley and mountain can be seen'. With average ascents of about 4,000ft per day, this is probably one of the most challenging walking weeks available in Britain. We'll hike amongst stunning mountains and moorland, remote tarns, high passes, lakes and waterfalls in the footsteps of this remarkable man whose idiosyncratic handwritten guides have inspired thousands of walkers over the years.
The full walk envisioned by Wainwright covers102 miles. For this magnificent one week holiday, we'll start with an exhilarating circular walk from Buttermere, taking in Haystacks and Innominate Tarn, the site of Wainwright's final resting place, followed by five linear day hikes covering some of the highlights of the Lake District National Park.
We encounter Great Gable for a view over one of the most isolated and dramatic of valleys, Wasdale, continuing to the summit of Pillar for panoramic views and ascend into the Scafells. Keeping to the high ridges and spectacular skyline, we cross Great End and Bow Fell to descend into the Langdale Valley and across the Langdale Pikes to the picturesque village of Grasmere.
Hiking from Ullswater we cross Striding Edge to ascend Helvellyn and down to Thirlmere, with a final day's walk over the tops from Derwent Water. .
