Tintern - Wye Valley Wanderings
Secluded charm, ancient woodland and the majestic river Wye.
OverviewPerhaps the most unspoilt river valley in Britain, the Wye flows through breathtaking scenery rich in both Welsh and English history.
Over 800 years ago Cistercian monks chose Tintern as a site for their new abbey due to its isolated position beside the River Wye. Little has changed in the years since. The monks have long gone, but the partly restored abbey still stands tall and the area retains its secluded charm beneath steep wooded slopes in a deep cut valley.
The area enjoys a relatively mild climate and the vineyard on open slopes above the village still remains in production, carrying on a local tradition probably started by the Romans. Down river lies the historic border town of Chepstow, where stands the ruin of an early Norman castle, the first to be built of stone in Britain.
We'll following sections of the Wye Valley Walk and the Offa's Dyke paths. These meander along the hillsides high above the majestic River Wye, often emerging at superb viewing points such as 'the Eagle's Nest' and 'Devil's Pulpit'.
Taking in the area's rich history, we can visit the castle at St Briavels and the Naval Temple near Monmouth to discover the myths and legends of the borderlands of Wales and England.
And then there's the hand ferry across the river and the ascent to the breathtaking view point of Symonds Yat rock.
