The Route of the Orient Express
A European Adventure!
OverviewStep back in time to the age when travel was thrilling, full of mystery, discovery and romance. This is a classic journey from London to Istanbul through changing landscapes, cultures and cuisine and sightseeing on foot in great cities on the way. From the fin de siècle architecture of Nice to the onion shaped domes of Sofia’s churches, from the canals of Venice to the minarets of Istanbul, above all else this is a journey of contrasts.
Each day and each section of our journey brings something new. Though the spirit of Hercule Poirot is present, hopefully we can avoid the bloodshed and intrigue traditionally associated with the train journey!
We travel south to Nice then east across the Alps and northern Italian plains. From Venice we continue east below the Julian Alps to Slovenia and Ljubljana, one of the smallest yet most attractive capitals in Europe. Crossing Croatia we reach Serbia and its dramatic capital Belgrade, which remains a beautiful, historic and welcoming place. The golden spires of Sofia are next and finally after a quick look at Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s second city, we take our only overnight sleeper train to Istanbul, the Golden Horn and the shores of Asia.
