The Northern Highlights
The Aurora Borealis, a Swedish winter wonderland above the Arctic Circle
OverviewThe Northern Lights fill the sky as you gaze on in awe. Everywhere is silent and nothing distracts from the wondrous natural light display above. The green, red and blue lights caused as the solar wind meets the Earth's magnetic field create spectacular glowing curtains of colour. Although the Northern Lights can never be guaranteed to make an appearance, due to its microclimate, the clear skies that predominate around Abisko give us the best chance of seeing the nightly display at its best.
We fly to Kiruna and travel north and west to Abisko, arriving in time for dinner and a chance to take the cable car up Abisko Mountain to get the best possible first viewing of the Northern Lights.
Over the next two days we explore on snow shoes and cross-country skis - a little exercise to work up an appetite for the evening. The days are short, but the darkness just adds to the mystique.
For the last night, we travel south to the world famous Ice Hotel. The whole building is created from carved ice, and rebuilt anew each year. It is a combination of art gallery and Hotel in one building.
